Okay I am at a loss. I need some opinions and help! I have a 9year old gelding. He has always just been a back yard/trail horse. More so someone's pet before I got him. I got him February/March of this year 2014. I started him from the ground up since I didn't now what kid of training or anything he had in the past. He was working great up until a about end of June- middle of July. Then he started short stepping/ limping but would work out of it. Never being on barrel or anything yet. Just getting him in shape, bending, working circles, stuff like that. Into August and September he strayed acting like he had a mild case of a locking stifle, but NEVER fully locked up. Just couldn't hold a lope in small circles on his back right leg. He has now been turned out for three weeks in a huge pasture, an no longer limps or short steps. He will even fully hold a lope in small circles again without any problems. What could this be? I have had him scanned and the vet said the horse has perfect joints and joint space. Up to date on shots, vet work, chiropractor, farrier work, everything. I am running out of options and money. Do I let him sit longer? The only thing I can think of and make me think it was a torn or pulled muscle is, about May/June he was in no joke knee high mud for a few days and got his butt kicked pretty bad by two horses. He had lumps, bumps, and bite marks all over his right side from his neck to his tail bone. I know he got knocked down in the deep mud because someone at the barn had to pull him out of the pasture he was being beat up so bad. I need opinions! I have zero experience with locking stifles so I don't know if this could be a locking stifle or not. Any and all help or advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Sometimes the srifles are and you can use estrone and will stretch them out. Had a three year old mare and she would short step some days yes and turn her for a couple of days she be fine. Gave her estrone for a few weeks and rode the heck out of her. By the way she made a really nice horse.

If he feels like he or she is stepping in a hole, while walking or trotting it might likely be a stifle.

No I don't think it feels like he is stepping in a hole. It's a limping feeling. And when you watch him work he was short stepping and actually limping on the back right leg. No swelling or heat anywhere
