I have a trailer house and was cutting my grass on a riding lawn mower Wednesday evening. When I got close to the house, the grass shooting from the blade went into an opening that I have by the water line and it hit a hornets nest. I turn the water on and off there every day at least once and have never seen a hornet. I was swarmed by them and stung several times. I'm not allergic, but there were a lot and they hurt a lot worse than a normal sting (I guess because the stings were concentrated in the same places). And, they hurt bad Wednesday night and most of yesterday. Really painful.

Anyways, Bryan went out after dark to kill them and unloaded two cans of spray on them and said there were a lot. Well, yesterday afternoon, he said that the nests were in the insulation of the trailer and started pulling them out. The nest was a 5 layer nest with the largest being bigger than a large sunflower with the petals. They layered down with each being a little smaller than the last. We estimated there were close to 1500 hornets. We have never seen one that big and in retrospect I am really, really lucky that I didn't get hit by more. They would have killed me or made me very sick. I've been drooling from Benadryl for two days now. So, disregard anything I say today, if you don't alread, because I'm still slobbering a bit. I need a bib today :)

This almost happened to my husband recently luckily he only got stung once.  He was saying it was pretty scary to him because he has a permanent leg injury and can't run, so he didn't know what he would have done if more than a couple would have came after him.  Once before his leg was hurt he was swarmed by a ton of yellow jackets, I think we counted about 20 stings around his head and face alone.....  that was a crazy day, he drank a bottle of childrens benadryl and passed out for the rest of the day and night... haha Glad you are ok.

OMG this terrifies me! I am so scared of hornets, wasps, bees and anything that flies and wants to sting me. Very lucky that you arent allergic.  Its good hubby is eliminating them. Glad you are ok. And heck today you can get away with saying whatever you want and can blame the benedryl!

I wasn't too scared of them until so many swarmed me. I can handle some stings, but this was a LOT of them. I had to get off the lawn mower and couldn't really see where I was running to. I could have ran smack into the house because my direction was so thwarted lol. That would have been great. Knock myself out by hitting the house and just lay there for the hornets.

GAH!!! That is close to my worst nightmare! We learned early on that I'm allergic to bees and wasps ... when I was 9, went out to feed my mare in her barn and got NAILED by 20 some stings to my face, neck, head, arms, etc ... I ended up in the hospital and now carry epi pens in all my vehicles, stashed in my barn - everywhere!!

dang girl!!! I'm so glad you are ok and healing ... benadryl sure can make ya drool!!

Haha, I know this isn't funny...but, I'm picturing you trying to drive away as fast as you can and realizing the mower wasn't going to do it for you so you bale off the mower, stumbling to the ground while the hornets are stinging the crap out of you, while you roll on the ground screaming for help.  Then they finally stop, you sit up and wipe the hair off your sweaty forehead wondering what the hell just happened!  lol    I hope you are feeling better, but I would appreciate a video of this whole thing!

I was picturing almost the same scenerio but instead jumping in the pond & having to stay there until they went away.  I'm glad your okay though & that they have been removed.  Now you need to get that hole filled so the lil suckers can't come back.

OMGosh I'm glad your ok.  I hate those things.  It never fails this time of year I usually get stung.  One year at a local parade it was real warm so I was rockin Daisy Dukes.  One stung me high on the ham.  OMLord it hurt.  I'm glad you found the nest though.  That could have been bad.  Who's Bryan?  Someone you found on the world wide web?

Oh, for you few getting a laugh out of my near death experience lol, here's another visual. Fred always rides on the lawn mower with me. He sits on my left leg and I hold him with my left arm/arm pit. He will follow me around circle after circle after circle until I let him ride, so it's just an automatic thing now. Well, hornets are bearing down on me, swarming all around us and all I can think of first is my little Fred. I'm pretty sure I threw him a good 30 yards like a football lol. Hornets everywhere, chihuahua flying through the air, me running like a lunatic, beer flying everywhere......I'm pretty sure I didn't spill/throw my beer until I had at least 10 hits lol..

That is scary, so glad that they didnt get you to bad, it was bad enough with the stings that you got. This happen to me when we lived in the Rio Grand Valley, I was working an area where I worked barrels with our closed in cab tractor, every time I got close to this one area, I would see the dogs kinda jumping around, and then it got worst, tons of bees came out of the ground and attacked the tractor and got in  the cab with me, finally got the door open, I thought I got it into park and hauled bums for hubby's shop and he saw what was happening all the bees were following me into the shop, had a few stings maybe 18, he had to get the air hose to blow them off of me, I wasnt cover but had enough. Tractor was up against a tree I thought I had it in park, I had it in a crawl, so when it hit the tree it just sit there.
They were the killer bee's and they were trying to live up to their name. The Fire Deparment came out and found the nest in a under ground water pipe.

I just had a mental image of that, lol. However it was better that out happened to you than my dad... he is extremely allergic to all kinds of hornet, wasp, and bee stings...so he has to take benadryl or another antihistamine even though he takes medication that says he shouldn't take antihistamines. But sorry it did happen to you as that hurts a lot. I do my best to avoid stinging insects.

Wow, gald you did not get hurt worse.  I have read of hornets/bees/wasps etc causing the person to have bad accidents trying to get away while on a tractor. Our neighbor behind us scared up a swarm of killer bees- luckily he was in a cab of his tractor- they swarmed the tractor for an hour trying to get at him.

Yes, Fred was fine. He had some little hurt feelings all day yesterday and a fake limp......when I wasn't watching he could jump on the couch just fine lol. I had to cuddle him in bed all day yesterday, drool on him and talk baby talk lol.

Wow thats a big nest, I wonder how old it is? So this was in the wall of your moblie home?

It was up in the insulation. The top layer was attached to the floor of the mobile home and it layered down. In the picture, the layer all the way to the left is two stacked together and that was the top layer.

Hubby and I were driving with the windows down a while back. Suddenly had a searing, hot, stabbing and awfyl pinchy feeling on my back. So I start clawing my shirt off, and whaddaya know? Damn hornet.  It swelled up like a golfball. One was bad enough. Sorry you had to get stung up. That's terrifying. Good thing you didnt crash your mower.

lurker - 2014-10-03 8:03 AM OMG this terrifies me!

I have such a sick sense of humor. I just laughed over the thought of you knocking yourself out and laying there for the hornets to do as they pleased. From the nice side of me: I am so glad you are okay. I HATE flying, stinging insects!

And with all that said....answer my text already!

Ok. Now I am laughing harder! Hope I don't wake the baby.

Oh my goodness I'm glad you're okay!!!

I didn't know we had hornets here until this summer, I just thought it was a wasp nest at the very top of our barn until one fell in a water bucket...I was like, holy moly that is a wasp on steroids! I'm too chicken to spray the nest while I'm on a ladder so I'm just hoping they go away soon since its getting colder, and next year I'm paying someone to take the nest down if they come back!

If your still burning make a paste of vinegar and backings soda and apply to the stings. We came across two nest in two weeks time getting stung by ground bees. I know your pain.

Thanks. They aren't stinging anymore. They stopped stinging within a few hours, but that night they H.U.R.T. lol. I was rubbing everything in the house on them. No lie, I even put some Vagisil on them. I don't recall why I had that and it was extremely old.....but, I'd have tried dog pee at that point lol.

I haven't read through all the replies so don't know if this has been brought up, but you might want to get an EpiPen-preloaded syringe for people who could have an anaphylactic reaction. Since you were stung so many times it is possible you could suffer a severe reaction the next time you are stung-even by one hornet or wasp.
