Location: PNW | With all the fear mongering going around the Internet lately, I thought I would share my aunt's perspective. She has a Ph.D in viral pathology and has worked EXTENSIVELY with some of the brightest minds in the field. This website offers both her thoughts, and several interviews with other scientists who have worked with the virus both in the field and in the lab.

And your thinking would be correct. See the following link:
http://www.eiahorse.com/Home_Page.php
My sister did a lot of research on EIA when the big controversy started back in the 90's. She talked directly to Dr. Lynn Kittleson who was one of the leading researchers on EIA. Dr. Kittleson did extensive testing on how easily (or, as she found from her testing, not so easily) an "EIA positive" horse could transmit the infection to another horse. She knew (and I believe worked with) Dr. Leroy Coggins and her comment to my sister was that Dr. Coggins would turn over in his grave if he knew how the test that he developed was being used - to kill healthy horses (inapparent carriers testing positive). She said he developed the test to be used as a diagnostic tool not as a regulatory tool.
There is a lot of "information" on the internet about EIA, but a great deal of that information appears to be opinions from people who have never studied it and the information is not always factual or accurate. EIA is not a highly fatal disease as is often stated. When she was doing her research, my sister visited with the state vet and he could only recall one horse that actually died from EIA. The F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Ranch in Florida, a quarantine ranch for horses testing positive on the Coggins test and housing over 100 horses at a time, only had two that actually died of EIA, and they were visibly sick when they arrived at the ranch.
Coggins Test: An agar gel immunodiffusion test modified and patented by Dr. Leroy Coggins in 1971. Considered for many years to be the standard test for EIA worldwide. Promoted as being approximately 95% accurate, it is subject to human interpretation and does produce varying results between labs and lab technicians. In recent years it has been shown to be less sensitive than the enzyme based tests. The Coggins test only determines whether or not there were EIA antibodies present in a horse’s system during that moment in time in which the sample of blood was drawn. Many people have been lured into the false belief that a negative test somehow offers protection for their horse, or for other horses they may come in contact with, for a period of several months or more when in fact it only indicates the state of their horse’s immune system at the moment the sample was taken.
A positive Coggins test is many times more deadly than EIA itself. (Estimates suggest that when left in a natural state, the disease would kill 1 out of every 20,000 horses but "test and destroy" has killed as many as 600 out of every 20,000 subjected to it.)

I'd read that it was airborne too as it's a virus like the flu. Besides, why would they need hazmat suits if it weren't? On another note, it's disgusting as humans to put others at risk. His children all went to school and college after being exposed. Hoping no innocent people lose their life because of it. |

From a scientist that works with pathogens in containment at levels 3 and 4 ... you wear a hazmat suit for protection - you don't know if you have tiny break in your skin, a minor bump or minor scrape that caused a break that you can't see. Ebola is spread by coming into contact with body fluids - so, for example in the field, if someone brushed against me with their sweaty arm and I did not have a suit on, I could contract Ebola from that person if I had a minor scrape or cut that you can't see. Make sense? You don't wear a hazmat suit ONLY for airborne pathogens. |

Lindsey that makes since but we all know that viruses can be spread by airborne so I dont' understand why they feel this one cannot be...
I understand - however, not all viruses are airborne pathogens. Its a common misconception
There are pathogens (specifically viruses) that cannot survive when aerosolized into the air - often desiccation will kill them. Some need a vector to spread them - West Nile being one that I'm sure everyone on this board is familiar with - it is not infections to mammals when airborne. It is most commonly delivered by a mosquito bite. However, you can become infected by blood transfusions, organ transplants, or "needle stick"/lab exposure (what I like to call being an idiot on your job). It can also be spread from mother to fetus if the mother is infected while being pregnant. None of these routes of infection are airborne.
Ebola - as far as any research that is true peer reviewed research supports - is not airborne. It needs to infect a host (bats, people, etc) in order to replicate and "survive"/thrive. This little blurb from the CDC website states the transmission of Ebola well:
http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/transmission/index.html
When an infection does occur in humans, the virus can be spread in several ways to others. Ebola is spread through direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes in, for example, the eyes, nose, or mouth) with blood or body fluids (including but not limited to urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk, and semen) of a person who is sick with Ebola- objects (like needles and syringes) that have been contaminated with the virus infected animals.
Ebola is not spread through the air or by water, or in general, by food. However, in Africa, Ebola may be spread as a result of handling bushmeat (wild animals hunted for food) and contact with infected bats. There is no evidence that mosquitoes or other insects can transmit Ebola virus.
Only mammals (for example, humans, bats, monkeys, and apes) have shown the ability to become infected with and spread Ebola virus.
As a virologist myself - It is difficult to help other non-scientist people understand that not every virus acts the same. They all have different properties that allow them to preferentially infect different hosts. The same can be said for bacteria as well.
Hope I helped a little ... |

From what I have read, if this virus mutates to an airborne form, it loses it's ability to infect humans. I'm not a virologist though, (I work in genetics), but the article I read explained why/how and was from a credible scientific journal. |

that paticular strain is just animals... but who can tell if the other 4 that are human but can spread to animals... will not become air borne?

This is true... It is known as Reston.... it killed several monkeys and 2 people were known to show antibodies from that outbreak but they never even got sick from it. Sorry.. wrong book Ok I mixed up my books.. There is a good book called 'The Hot Zone' about that indecent.

Outbreak in 1990 in USA 4 cases but no deaths, it was a strain of Ebola called RESTV that was brought to a quarantined facility by monkeys brought over from the Philippines. In Texas & Virginia.

Location: In the Hills of Texas | I remember this happening in 1996. A vet I know use to work at this facility. She has since moved to Colorado after the facility was shut down.
Public health officials discounted any threat to humans as they euthanized 48 monkeys Wednesday to contain an outbreak of the Ebola virus at a research center.
``The public has never been in danger and still isn't,'' said state Health Commissioner Dr. David Smith.
Still, fears about an outbreak involving a different strain of the Ebola virus that killed hundreds of people in Africa last year prompted even President Clinton to offer reassurances from Tokyo.
``There is no substantial threat to the general population of the people there or the people of the United States generally,'' Clinton said.
One monkey had already died and another had been euthanized at the Texas Primate Center, which breeds primates for medical research about 118 miles south of San Antonio.
A third monkey diagnosed with the virus Wednesday was being killed along with 47 others who were quarantined in the same room, and initial test results suggest authorities may also have to kill the rest of the 100 primates that arrived at the center March 21 from the Philippines. Location: In the Hills of Texas | Now we have this:
Our Mission: To improve the health of our global community through innovative biomedical research with nonhuman primates. In 1999, the Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) became the first new NCRR-funded National Primate Research Center (NPRC) in over 35 years. The SNPRC brings a number of unique strengths to the NPRC program, stemming from a long, productive history of nonhuman primate research at its host institution, the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed). These unique strengths include the world’s largest captive baboon population, the world’s largest and best-characterized pedigreed primate population, the world’s largest group of geneticists committed to research with and management of captive nonhuman primates, one of the largest nonhuman primate censuses of any NPRC, the largest chimpanzee census of any NRPC, the capacity for nonhuman primate studies in Biocontainment Level 4, and a veterinary technical staff experienced in the management and use of nonhuman primates ranging from chimpanzees to marmosets. We provide broad services in primate research to the southwestern region of the country, and serve the entire country with specialized technologies, capabilities, and primate resources, many of which are unique to the SNPRC. We provide services and conduct technical procedures requested by outside investigators participating in collaborative projects. Baboons, SPF Indian-origin rhesus macaques, and marmosets are often available from our breeding colonies to sell to outside investigators who want to conduct research with them at the SNPRC. Most of the rhesus macaques are produced under support of an NIH grant aimed at providing these animals for AIDS-related research, although other research uses of this species also are possible. Baboons are generally available for sale and removal to other research facilities, and rhesus macaques and marmosets are occasionally available for sale. Click here to submit a request. |

Yeah.. the scary part about that strain is after they cleaned and disinfected the buildings in Va and Tx they brought in more monkeys the following year which promptly contracted it again and died. They closed the buildings in both places and tore them down. |

My bad.... sorry..
Here's a question... If the monkeys were quarantined for 30 days prior to being shipped to the US, how come they developed EBO-Reston once they reached the US? The incubation period of EBOLA in nonhuman primates is 5-7 days.

Location: Here | Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Tom Frieden said Sunday the agency is “deeply concerned” by the second U.S. Ebola case. At a news conference that began at 11 a.m. ET, Frieden said it’s possible we’ll see more U.S. Ebola cases in the coming days. This is in stark contrast to the way the CDC messaged its strongly controlled narrative two weeks ago. Back then the CDC went out of its way to say there was no chance Ebola could spread in Texas, all while claiming it has been fully contained. But now they’re saying it’s very possible we’ll see more cases in the coming days? - See more at: http://www.libertynews.com/2014/10/breaking-cdc-now-saying-more-u-s... |

I poo pooed the idea last year when folks were talking about that... I could not imagine a way that could happen, but I was thinking the same thing just a few hours ago. |

On another note, it's disgusting as humans to put others at risk. His children all went to school and college after being exposed. Hoping no innocent people lose their life because of it.
Given the fact that his "sphere of contact" was so broad (all of the passengers while traveling, his family, his family's day-to-day contacts like their school/work environment) and only ONE person has come down with the virus has actually been pretty remarkable and should speak to the communicability of the disease. He was in a small apartment vomitting, having diarrhea, probably sweating profusely on the couch/beds/etc -- all those bodily secretions that you know SOMEBODY had to have come into contact with and not one of them tested positive (unless there is some sort of cover up to avoid hysteria)?
Plus, everyone is just assuming this was a nurse, right? I keep seeing "she" this and "she" that. We don't even know if it was from his initial ER visit when he was sent home (again, all those patients in the ER he came into contact with. Someone sat in his sweaty waiting room chair, triage chair, etc) or if it was after he was diagnosed. |

I heard on the radio this morning it was a nurse and there was some suspicion that it was related to the procedures when they are taking OFF the hazmat suits. I live in the area too. |

Is it a nurse? I mean, it makes sense since nurses would be handling all the bodily secretions but haven't seen where it's been confirmed. |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | DALLAS – The Texas nurse who contracted Ebola while caring for the first person to die of the virus in the U.S. has been identified as 26-year-old Nina Pham.Health officials have not released the nurse’s name, but Yahoo News identified Pham through public records and a state nursing database. Then on Monday, Pham’s family confirmed her identity to USA Today, the publication reported. Pham, a critical care nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas, is one of at least 50 people who cared for Thomas Eric Duncan, who died last Wednesday. Pham has been in isolation since late Friday. The CDC confirmed her Ebola diagnosis on Sunday. It is the first time the deadly virus has ever been transmitted in the United States. The Dallas resident is a 2010 graduate of Texas Christian University and has been a nurse since June 2010, according to state records. |

Location: Broxton, Ga | The history of Ebola shows us that the virus up to this point has been very specific to hot African countries, which makes a lot of people come to the inaccurate conclusion that Ebola thrives in hot climates, which simply is not the case. Ebola, much like other aerosol transmittable viruses, tends to be many times more transmittable during the cold dry months of winter, something up to this point hasn’t been openly seen with Ebola, since it has never been spread outside of Africa. Not only can the Ebola virus survive in both a liquid & dried state for several days in room temperature outside of a host, but as the temperature goes down, the virus thrives even more, becoming able to survive outside of a host (again in both liquid or dried states) for even longer (becoming indefinitely stable at -70C).

OK... First of all I question all the sources provided here.... Rawfeed and godlikeproductions.com??? Gimme a break here... Ebola cannot survive outside a host in cold because cold kills it.. just like hot and dry places because UV and Gamma (Strong sunlight) kill it too... Ebola comes from the jungle... Hot climate with a dark (under the jungle canopy) environment. Once outside of that environment it dissipates unless it is maintained in a laboratory or a host. All this information can be found at CDC and WHO websites as well as other infectious disease research sites. Stop spreading panic.. |

| NOW, they suspect a man in Kansas City, Ks has it - he had worked in the "hot zone" - folks, this is going to spread like wildfire and nobody will be able to stop it because it SEEMS they don't know HOW people are getting it. OBVIOUSLY the hospitals DON'T know the correct protocol or it was NOT followed there in Dallas for that nurse to have gotten it. I don't believe a single thing that comes out of our corrupt government on this, (or anything else). |

The word this morning is that the Dallas hospital did not have a biocontainment unit like certain other hospitals that are more prepared for these cases. She was wearing a full suit, two sets of gloves, etc. Extra precautions. However, they did not have the full jumpsuit with the taped gloves, connected boots, etc. |

Location: wherever my daughter's running | My heart breaks for the nurse in Dallas and the one in Spain. Doing their jobs with the equipment they were given may have cost them their lives. IF you want to see how the two people brough to Emory in Atlanta were transported google the plane. It was a very protective enviroment. Can something like this not be replicated in hospitals? Another thing I do not understand is how are hospitals making such a quick decision that people do not have Ebola? Case in point the couple in New York. They had fevers, had been in South Africa - a great distance from the out break - but so is the US, and it was determined they did not have Ebola the very same day they went to the hospital. I thought it took atleast a day to get results back if not two. One would think surely it could not happen again like with Duncan - but you never know. Also, what is the condition of the man in Nebraska? As for the man in Kansas I feel confident he has it by the way that is being handled. Prayers for the two nurses, the man in Nebraska, and all the others in quarantine |

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | Texas Town Has Not Been Quarantined After Family of Five Tests Positive for EbolaA fake article published earlier today claims that the small town of Purdon, Texas has been quarantined after a family had tested positive for Ebola. Sponsored Links Fake News This spurious piece is the latest attempt at viral fear mongering from National Report, an ill-famed satire site notorious for their fake news pieces. The false article claims that the small town of Purdon, Texas had been quarantined after a family of five had been diagnosed with the Ebola virus. It goes on to claim that the father of the family had apparently contracted Ebola on a business trip to Dallas (reported to be 70 miles away), and the rest of the family had subsequently caught the virus when the man did not seek medical attention. According to the fictional column, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had sealed off the town with road blocks. To repeat, the write-up is phony. Satirical Ebola ArticlesSponsored Links Recently, Ebola has been a prominent topic for the mainstream news media. In turn, this makes it a favored topic for satire sites which intend on capitalizing on current newsworthy trends with fabricated news articles. At times, this involves scaremongering as a tactic for attracting traffic. National Report Imitation news articles originating from such websites as National Report have become profitable over the last two years. Oftentimes, such articles are transmitted through social media avenues by wide-eyed readers who appear to only glance at the headlines before passing them on to friends. Occasionally, such behavior results in viral memes. In previous times, the National Report website had contained a disclaimer which let visitors know that their articles were fictional and intended as satirical entertainment. Of late, the disclaimer has been withdrawn or concealed from public visibility. Summary A small town in Texas has not been quarantined after a family of five tested positive for Ebola. The website which published this claim (National Report) has been recognized as a satirical website which produces artificial news. |

Thanks. I'd heard of the national review and had googled it and this is what I read, a semi monthly magazine started in 1955 by William F. Buckley. It describes itself as ' Americans most widely read and influential magazine and web site for conservative news, commentary and opinion.' I'm so glad that it turned out to be nothing. My son and his friend were in Dallas last weekend for the OU game and state fair down there. Sons friend threw up for 2 days after and luckily his dad is a doctor because they immediately took him in a tested for everything, even a concussion. Just the flu. That's got to make it harder to diagnose right off. |

HotbearLVR - 2014-10-14 4:50 PM "Satire"? Yeah, I guess. I was laughing hysterically When I read that. Everybody needs to just calm down and make sure your sources are reliable and reputable.
And I apologized and also wrote a lengthy response right above this one.
I didn't mean to pick on you. It's easy to react without actually considering the source. How anyone could consider a hoax like that satire is beyond me.
I like svincent's original post. I hope we can stay ahead of the hysteria and not let ourselves get sucked into it. |

Satire gives you clues. That didn't. Always look for multiple reliable sources and you so t be fooled. |

| One thing I can't wrap my head around is the status of Duncans family. Have they been in the public light since his death? How did one of them NOT get it? They must have been checking on him...maybe he did know he had it and told them to not be in the apartment? How long did they stay in that same apartment during their quarantine period until their secret move?

I was wondering the same thing. It's like they never existed. Something isn't right. |

Where are the reporters on this? They knew he had it I bet and stayed clear of the apartment. That has to the explanation as to why they didn't get it. Thought the sheriff was there for a long time though in the apartment and they would have been there at that time. Nothing adds up...
I also hate that they are so quick to rule out sick airline passengers based on "risk exposure". If you're not a healthcare provider or have family w/ebola, welcome to America, how was your flight? Even though you're sick on the airplane. 6 people w/flu like symptoms from daibi were not "risk exposure" so again, welcome. That was Sunday night. Let go into our society. |

Once someone recovers from Ebola, they can no longer spread the virus. However, Ebola virus has been found in semen for up to 3 months. Abstinence from sex (including oral sex) is recommended for at least 3 months. If abstinence is not possible, condoms may help prevent the spread of disease.
I mean really? Can't keep it in your pants long enough to make sure you are cleared? OY! |

Why yes, they have been in the public light. They were on TV last night saying they are going to sue the hospital. Because they say, the hospital knew the first time he went to the emergency room with a temperature that he had Ebola. And, the hospital sent him home to die because he was black.
I do wonder though, why none of them have come down with it.
Fact is, as I have been able to research - he didn't tell the hospital at first where he had been. |

I'd heard that he lied initially too. Suing has become a way of life for some people. A guy here shot and buried alive a teenager while she cried and begged for her life. His 'botched' execution has his family suing our state/ govenor. Pathetic. |

Our new sick society where good is now considered evil and evil is now considered cool. Ferguson and St. Louis is a perfect example. Look at all of the people that flat out lied and how they stuck together with their lies. |
