Aprox. how much does it cost to have a mare AI? I entered a free breeding contest and am currently leading by a good bit. He is a money producing son of Frenchmans Guy out of a DTF daughter and that's the kind of cross I was looking for so I thought ok I have nothing to loose because I probably won't win anyway. So I entered. When I read about this stud on his Facebook page it said he was standing in Oklahoma and was for live cover or they would do frozen. So I decided if I won I would do live cover. Well It failed to mention that he had recently been sold to a breeder in Australlia. So now I'm not sure what to do. I don't know if I can afford AI mainly because there is no telling how much shipping would be for frozen.

The shipping for frozen is not necessarily more expensive than cooled, it's the actual breeding fees that will be more expensive because breeding with frozen requires more ultrasounds to calculate ovulation and deep horn insemination as well. If you don't have a good repro vet that is familiar with breeding using frozen semen, don't do it, it will be a waste of your time and money.

It's not that bad, if you were wanting to use a recip mare THEN you'd have a reason to worry. Of she catches first try I've been told 400-500$. I will be a first time breeder next season too!

"IF catches first try"
My vet told me when I breed my mare AI the first time to budget for 3 and hope for 1
I think the best thing to do is call the repo vets in your area find the one you like best and get a price from them. Ive noticed the prices can vary quite a bit.
I paid just over 500 for fresh cooled semen cought first try.

That's what I thought. From what I gather, he has been owned by the Australian people for a while. He is standing in the USA. The FROZEN is being used in AUS. (Cooled for the USA and Canada.)
