Does anyone have a photo of how Ed Wright rigs the reins using a shoe string to keep the reins from going over the horse's head?

I went to a clinic and my horse works better with this method and I sit better in the saddle, so we like it. Did have the reins flip over my horse's head once, and he said I needed a shoe string to rig it up, and I didn't have one with us for him to show me.

No clue, but I would love to know. I have had plenty of times where reins have went over my mare's head. We won a pole run with the reins stuck on her nose and tie down, she was a good girl for it, just did it like normal. I was just thinking 'crap, this is it, poles are gonna start falling'. Stopping was the fun part though. haha

I think you tie the string on one end of the rein, not sure how far down, and then tie the other end of the string to the other rein. The string should be under their neck. When you use the reins, the string should not inhibit the cue. Clear as mud??

Yeah, I was wondering if the shoe string went through a hole in the reins. I had a piece of fairly thin rope and he said that was too thick.

He made me take the snaps off my reins. I haven't flipped them since.

I went to no snap, leather reins he recommended, and no flipping in a while.

I also bought a pair of his reins while at the clinic, no snap....and during the clinic the reins flipped over my mare's head. Just once.....but I really don't want that to happen while I'm running if I can help it. I don't need any extra problems!! LOL

That's when he told me I needed to get a shoe string and rig them up. I am just a very visual person and need to see a pic.

I've looped 3 rubber bands together and looped one band to rein and did a basic knot on other side at about the throatlatch area

You use bailing twine. Tie it where you breast collar comes into your saddle, under the neck on top of reins and back to other side of saddle. Just make sure you do it loose enough that you can pick your reins up like he told you to. Does that make sense?

I think June Holeman used to do that the year she made the NFR...I remember seeing her with a loose rope around Sparky's neck to keep the reins from flipping over

I THINK this might help out a little bit
its a YT vid of a rodeo in Canada. Lindsay Sears is the first barrel racer out. If you pause the clip at the 1:20 mark, you can see string that is attached to both reins

not sure if this is the Ed Wright rig

Thanks!! It looks like the string just goes from one rein to the other??? My computer didn't want to play it so had to look on my phone.

That is what it looks like to me too.  It also looks like she had something dangling off from the rope...maybe some weights or something

Will do. I was also told to tie a thin string from the ring of the cinch to the rein, about a foot or so from the bit. That to me sounds like it will keep the reins from going anywhere.

If you find some pics of Kelly Yates you probably will see that rig set up as well...I remember seeing some pics a while back in BHN of her with something on her reins and I thought it was to keep them from flipping over...

I loop about 4 rubber bands together into a chain, then unhook my reins from the bit and put each end of my rubber band chain on the reins. I wind up with the rubber bands loosely connecting my reins under the horse's neck. Never have flipped them doing this and the rubber bands stretch so you can still use your reins. I'll see if I can find a picture.

I didn't realize so many people had this problem. What causes it to happen? Ive only had it happen once when my gelding tripped and pulled the reins out of my hand. I've seen people with thin rope that goes around their breast collar D ring and to the reins. Hard for me to explain without a pic. Never knew why though.

I use the smallest bungee you can find and connect it on each side of my reins. If I could post a pic, I'd show you.

My theory is if the reins reach your chest or waist .. It's gonna happen . Keep the reins to the pad or horn . Decent weight on the reins helps too.
