Location: Australia | About 2 months ago now my main mare injured herself... I have no idea how as it happened in the paddock, and she NEVER gets hurt. Anyway, it is just above the hairline off her hind offside hoof (I'll attempt to upload photo) It was quite deep and clean, not jagged or gouged, a clean slice, but it swelled from her fetlock halfway up her canon... As far as i could tell there were no signs she'd been wrapped in wire as a) i keep all the paddocks she has access to clear of wire and b) she didn't have another mark on her... So... I have no idea. My first question is why did it swell so far? around the fetlock I can understand but all the way up her canon? (She was lame at first but as soon as the swelling went down after a couple of days, she showed no lameness)
I began treating her, hosing it out, flushing with salty water and applying peroxide. This worked well. Due to my main girl being injured, I started work on my young one, which didn't go so well, I got bucked off and fractured my spine, so I was unable to continue treating my mare, so Dad did it for me. I was only just able to check her for the first time in 3 weeks and the wound has healed well, but it healed over how I was worried it would, the cut didn't close up, it just kind of "filled in"... It is solid, not squishy, and just looks like she took skin off the outside, and she is not sore... My 2nd question is will this affect her long term, She isn't lame, and the swelling is gone but there is a large chunk of flesh there that shouldnt be... May sound stupid I'm just worried... Again she isn't lame or sore in the slightest, as due to my injury she'll have another couple months off herself to come good...

| She will be fine by the time you are ready to ride. I hate when horses do these kinds of things to themselves. Good luck on recovery to both you and your horse!

Location: OK | The large chunk of flesh there that shouldn't be, is it proud flesh? If so, sometimes a vet will cut it off and give you some powder to put on it to take it down. If it's not too big, just get the powder and put that on. It's unhealthy growth of flesh on wounds that feels or looks like cauliflower a little. Post a pic :) |

Location: Australia | No its clean and flat, not cauliflower-y. I treated her with peroxide, which kept it down and while dad was treating her for me he used yellow lotion, which is meant to stop growth of proud flesh..
Will post a pick ASAP. |

Location: Pacific Northwest | Did it just scar really badly maybe?
It might also just be a very thick scab that will take longer to heal. |

Location: Australia | Heres photos from today, before and after hosing. It closed up completely about a week into treating with hydrogen peroxide and dries out well... I'm wondering if I should let it dry out and leave it or keep hosing and putting peroxide on?

| I would hydro it everyday and put WONDER DUST on it. It does look like a little proud flesh is forming. |

Location: Australia | I dont know how to explain its not proud flesh as such its just skin from where ive peeled the crust off, and it also gets soggy when i hose it... if you understand that... its different in person, and the peroxide keeps it down well and eats all the nasty stuff away. |

Location: Southwest Minnesota | You could clean it every day but don't use peroxide again. Peroxide will clean the wound out but it kills new tissue growth. Maybe try Vetricyn or something else along those lines. |

Was what I was going to say Peroxide should just be used the first day or so. After that it will hinder the growth of new tissue. I'm all for underwoods. And at this stage I think it would do a lot of good to keep the proud flesh at bay. |

My vet just told me not to use underwoods for any injury below the knees. I guess studies have shown that it promotes the growth of proud flesh. and don't use peroxide any more on it because it will also kill off the new, healthy tissue that is trying to come in. I would wash it once a day with surgical scrub, you can buy it off line, and then use granulex spray twice a day, and then use Aluspray(liquid bandage) after the granulex dries to cover the wound. I just discovered the Aluspray, my vet gave it to me for my 2 yr old (pics of hers is on here), and I love that stuff, keeps the wound clean, flies out, and it washes off easy. Good luck! |

agreed. I have never had it promote proud flesh and I've used it plenty on wounds below the knees/hocks ..... |

| Imwould give her a little rompom and scrub all that yelow stuff off. Got tothe store get a bag of pickling lime and dut the heck out of it. And every other day i would rompom and scrub all the junk off the just wet and sprinkle that lime on it. It is cheap and simple.

| My mare cut her left front coronary band. I used Underwoods and and baking powder. NO proud flesh. Can't tell where it was now. |
