Location: Lost in the swamps | I have tried bobby pins, flipping the back of my hat, double sided clothing taped to my forehead, hairspray, sponges, tissue in my brim, nothing keeps it on,but!! I don't like a super tight hat either it gives me pounding headaches. And I like to warm up, ride in a hat for a few days before to get used to the feel because I don't wear them often. So I use a stampede string. place the clips close to the front, and hide it behind my ears and set the stopper more to one side and put it in my shirt to where you can't see it. |

Location: Texas | I use them. I tried and tried and tried to not…I wanted to look cool :/. But, oh well, can't fight my head shape not cooperating. I can wear a 6 5/8 without foam and a 6 3/4 with foam. Even with it crammed on my head, they come off. I honestly figured, the fashion statement I was looking for was not worth the distraction I was getting. So I jam it down and use the strings and make my run.
Honestly, if someone wants to judge me looking dorky with it on, then go ahead. my run is the most important thing and I found something that works for me and allows me to focus on my run.

The trick that works for me is braiding my hair. If I do a french braid it seems like there is more grip to my head hahaha. |

I've tried everything, too. I have a small head and fine short hair. I just use a stampede string. Frankly, who cares...my self-esteem is high enough that I don't worry about it. |

Location: west of East Texas | I didn't realize they had such a huge dork factor. If you need one, by all means put the dang thing on your hat! I just sat through our first double header Junior High Rodeo and I think if I had been the Director I would have mandated them after the first rodeo. I have never seen so many kids losing their hats. And my daughter was one of them! She hasn't lost her hat in years! I even added more hair pins for the second rodeo and had her braid her long hair so that it would quit flying around. I don't know if it was the weather or what because it was ridiculous. This is one of my pet peeves. |

Location: PNW | I HATE stampede strings, BUT I also have an uncooperative head shape that hats won't stay on. I took a length of clear elastic (buy it at any craft store, usually in the necklace OR sewing aisles) and hot glued it to where a stampede string would attach. It does the job, but you can't even tell it is there :) |

Location: on my horse | I wear a helmet now (bad concussion, long story) but before I used a stampede string because I got tired of cramming my hat down on my head so far it popped the top out and stuck my ears out just to keep it on long enough for a run and then pulling it back off stuffing a shape back into it and massaging away my ear ache lol. I may not have been fashionable but I didn't care and still don't now with the helmet
I didn't have to worry about losing my hat and could actually see what was going on above my horse's ears without the brim crammed down and in the way lol |

Seriously. Call me whatever you want and laugh behind my back--it's either tie it on or lose it.
If I tried to pin my hat on, it would just rip my hair. If I tried to glue it on, I would have zits for a month. My snug hat already causes me pain because of the metal plate, screws, and abutment in my head...any tighter and I'd be crying too hard to run. |

| I knew some people can't stand to wear them. I never knew people thought they were this dorky? I mean who the f cares...unless you are walking around with it cinched as tight as heck between your runs....I'd say the 15 seconds it takes to make a run and keep your hat on is perfectly acceptable. |

I totally AGREE with this statement! I'd rather wear an extremely TIGHT hat and put it on just before I make my run than wear ANY stampede string....first they are ugly, and secondly, they sometimes make the hat swing around into your face.
Back to the ugly, though, I'd rather go to town in high water pants with crew socks and loafers in true Steve Irkle style than wear a stampede string! lol I'd just as soon pay a hat fine, if need be, thank you very much!
Did I mention I HATE stampede strings?! |

Didn't know stampede strings carried such a stigma. I wear a helmet so it doesn't really matter, but I'd be dead before I stuck bobby pins into my scalp to avoid wearing a string... |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | I too was at a double header Jr. High rodeo and two girls lost their hats in the alley way which added a 5 second penalty. I was in shock after we just had an hour long meeting specifically addressing hats falling off in the alley way. I would rather be uncool then have 5 seconds added to my run. |

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | Hate them... really could care less how they look, but hate feeling like I'm being choked. I still don't know how it happened, but I had one suck my hat down and it got in front of my face during the run. I go with stuffing paper towels in the hatband, pulling the liner down in the back and CRAMMING that sucker on. Generally it stays really well. Unconfortable, yes...but beats getting choked! |

Location: Oklahoma | I hate them. It's not necessarily a "cool" factor or not for me... it's the fact that I can't stand stuff around my neck/chin area. I used the ones made from hair &/or plastic string when I was younger and as a nervous tick I would pull some of the strands out with my teeth... then they would start to poke me on the face and that was just awful. I do have a leather one that's smooth, but it seems like unless you know exactly where to poke the holes in your hat band they just always feel wonky to me.
I manged to get lucky and do the trick of folding the back of the hat band down and liberally spraying everything with hairspray and quickly shoving it down on my head. It works like a charm for me and it stays put until I pull it off. |

Truly the BIGGEST problem I have with them is that the hat gets in your face rather than just flying off...I do think they are dorky looking BUT if they were 100% fool proof not to get a hat in the face, I'd wear one anyway. I've seen too many a good run ruined/wasted by hat swung around on a stampede string. I'd rather pay a fine. |

I definitely see your point here. Reminds me of a youtube video I saw of a little girl running her horse...or trying to! Her hat kept falling into her face throughout the run. |

I bought a "round" hat and realized that I shoulda been wearing an "oval" .... restretched the hat and amazingly I've not had a problem since. Cram 'em on so your ears stick out and the top is popped ... they don't come off! |

Mainly because I was young and my dad made me because most of the places we would go to a hat fine would be anywhere from $25-$100. Mine was a black and white blend and I would put it behind my ears and tighten it and put the tail in my shirt. But like next week when we are at world I won't wear a helmet except for just riding and warming up. I will run in my hat and it will have a string. |

On rodeo court we had to use bobby pins and I HATED THEM, they hurt my head SO bad and I'd have a headache for days. If I ever get to run at a real race or rodeo I would most likely use a stampede string if I thought my hat might fall off.
The person with the clear elastic strap has a very good idea though, I never would have thought of that. |

I care more about making a run without distractions. :-) |
