What do you use in the winter to keep manes and tails clean when you can't wash them? Once it gets cold and stays that way the slinky helps with manes... I've used show sheen or vetrolyn in the past but not always successful and I don't dare brush it if it won't brush freely because it's dirty. Thanks!

Itie a big knot that is close to the tailbone and used vetrap from top of tailbone past tye knot leave it for a couple of months at a time then wash out and start again. By spring i cut at least 6-10 inche off tail. Do that to all my horses. Works great especially with no bugs. Keeps tail clean also.

Braid in tail wraps my horses have had them in all summer and on average have grown 6 inches ....I have a stud the rubs his main out every summer so he wears a sleazy all winter and by spring he has a beautiful mane that is ready to rub out again.

I wash my mares tail out with whitening stuff (palomino, so dirty tail!) spray vetrolin shine and then braid and stick in tail bag. Take out every couple weeks and spray with vetrolin and rebraid and put in diff bag. Only way for her to get thru winter with a semi clean tail thats not brown. Plus makes it thicker come spring.

Tails are getting dirty with what? Crap? If so then your horse probably has the runs and need their feed changed. If its just plain dirt/dust then brush/curry them. I've got horses that I hardly touch all winter, get them up in the Spring and brush and curry before riding, no big deal. There are some that I keep up next to the barns and they get groomed every once in a while.
