Location: In The Land of Cotton | We blanket two horses at our home. One gets spots on her chest where the hair gets rubbed off. Right where it goes into the leg/shoulder area.. How can we prevent that this year? We used a tape and bought her a blanket last year with the correct measurements.. Should we be putting a slinky on under it? Suggestions? |

Location: Notasulga, Alabama | A slinky will help, but the main issue is the blanket doesn't fit right. You do get what you pay for on blankets, but just like saddles and everything else in the horse world each brand is just a little different. So you could spend a lot of money trying a lot of different blankets to see which one doesn't rub your horse, or just buy the slinky. And they make a great chest slinky so you don't have to have the full head one just to protect the shoulders. |

Location: In The Land of Cotton | The blanket is a Weatherbeta, which to me wasn't cheap. However, any brands to suggest? She is a short stocky little cutting horse. My husband says he just can't have a fuzzy horse in the pen.........................
And, should we have closed front?
For brands - maybe Schneiders?

Location: Northeast SD | Get a high-neck one. There are some now that come up half ways on the neck. This has helped our short stocky horse |

| Schnieders has blankets specifically made for quarter horses. Incredible blankets at great prices. They blow Weatherbeeta out of the water. |

Yes it does. I am going to remeasure her again. This is the only one I have problems with. She doesn't have much of a mane and it gets rubbed out easy, so i am hesitant to get a higher neck. I am wondering if I shouldn't get one without the gussets?
And, would a front closed make it better then hooking it in the front? |

Location: MD | I would feel like having the buckles connecting in the front would give you more of a range when fitting her.
Having a closed front might limit some of the rubbing and discomfort though, i don't know what would be best for you :(.
Then again, I'm not much of a person that blankets, I let them get their whole coat and wait til it gets real cold and windy to put blankets on. Just for the sheer fact that they are dang expensive and they won't be totally S.O.L. without a blanket if it gets destroyed or wet. |

| I use Brookside turnout blankets (the medium weight ones) from Valley Vet and have never had a rub problem. Even the medium weight ones are heavier than you'd expect and they have held up real well. Not to pricey either....$150. |

Location: Notasulga, Alabama | Schniders are great. I have the Dover brand (I think it's riders international) with the full attached neck covers. Having the neck cover is the greatest thing ever. I always hated how my horses body would stay smooth, but the neck was still fluffy. A lot of times people order up a size when the horse gets rubbed in the chest and sometimes they actually need to go down a size. This is where the higher neck blankets help. You just don't want it sagging down in the front and then it slips down on the shoulders and gets tight when they walk. You want it up high enough that they gussets are where their leg movement is... is this making any sense?
If he really doesn't want fluffy, may I recommend body clipping. I came from the English world and I was shocked no one body clips in the western world. Especially the people who will blanket the horse all the time. I understand if you don't want to or don't have the time to blanket. Here in Alabama our winter days can still get warm, and I hate having a furry sweaty foamy horse after a work out. With a clipped horse, I can still hose them off and put a cooler on them and their dry in only a few minutes. I just have them blanketed anytime it's under 50-55 degrees.
Heres the one I have. No rubs on either my skinny track built horse or my wide as a barn foundation horse, and they wear them 24 hours a day a lot of times.

Location: In The Land of Cotton | I measured her again last night. She came back the same 72. I looked at her blanket that she has now, it has "pleats" on the inside where it was rubbing her shoulders. We are going to look at the Schneiders this weekend. I had watch the video on their web page so that he would help measure her right.
Thanks for all the replies. Hopefully, he will get a better fit then he has now. |
