| My current barrel horse was purchased to get me back in the swing of things. She has been wonderful, but its time to move on. She is now my ranch horse and will eventually be my daughter's jr high rodeo horse (if my daughter wishes to go that route). When or I purchase a new horse, it's main purpose will be barrels, but my husband will also use it to pick up on and on the ranch. So, my question is: how many of you JUST barrel race your good barrel horses?? |

| I used my good horse to work cows in south Texas brush. He was do cool, he crash that brush like nobody's business. He LOVED it! My husband who was brought up working cattle in the brush stole him from me a time or two. Said he was one of the best he had ever rode. This horse was a WPRA money winner, too. My dad had to borrow my sister's pro horse a few times to pick up on, too when she was at home. I think most horses love variety, just like we do. |

| Our horses see a variety of things and I think they're better for it. I like to split my time between the arena, riding down the road, and riding through pastures. My husband takes care of pasture cattle, which means checking, doctoring, and moving/gathering cattle. He also ropes, pushes cattle, and picks up broncs. Of course not every horse is suited for every job, and I wouldn't want to send my best horse blowing through a pasture to doctor a steer and risk injuring themselves by stepping in a hole or something like that. |

Location: MD | I haven't been racing a whole bunch lately, but my one horse is terrified of cows and I have been using him heavily on the feed lots to get him more versatile. Next year I'm contemplating showing him in some hus classes because he moves sooo pretty! his last two outs he won the 1D out of 50-75 and was in the middle of the 2d out of 150+(he's still in the seasoning process so he isn't consistent yet). my other one has been jumping and trail riding, some work in the feed lots too. I only take him through a set a few times before a show, last two outs he won the 2d out of 150+ and 3rd in the 1D out of 50-75 girls with bobbles.
they are both pretty well rounded, and are really coming around to be impressive horses. I like that they are versatile and don't behave like their only job is to run really fast around three barrels. on occasion they pack around a couple kids for some lessons and that means the most to me.
I know your question was who just barrel races, but I typed all this out before I realized it so you all get to read it :D MUAHAHA |

| My horse has been team penning and I work him dressage a lot. I do a lot of trail riding and have been doing ground work to teach him to drive. I think its great for them to do new things! |

| my good horse does it all, too. Barrels, ropes with the husband, packs and horse camping, ranch chores, kids lessons, HUS and Hunter over Fences, parades, shooting, and whatever else I want to torture her with. The one thing she does NOT do...carriages. She HATES them. Other than that we're good. LOL |

Glad to know my gelding isnt the only one who hates carriages! lol
To answer original question, nope my guys trail ride, ride english and sort cows. Ive swung ropes off them and drug stuff as well. Id rather versatile and keep their brains, then ruin their brain. |

| Thanks everyone! I guess I just needed to "hear" that other people use their horses for more than barrels too! When I get a new horse, it will be a barrel horse first, then everything else, that it will work for. |

| We make it a point to trail ride all of ours!
About every three to four months we try to do a camping trip with them. |

I used him as a guide horse for our outfitting business, so he sees alot of trail miles. While he isn't my first choice as a guide horse (he's reactive, dramatic and spooky haha) he needs the riding. We also rope off him, take him to brandings etc.
He is tougher horse to deal with so the miles make him bearable haha. |

Location: Arkansas | I head steers and haze on my good barrel horse. I actually made the ARA Finals this year in barrels and team roping on the same horse. Hubby used to pick up on hm, but he quit when Bar became my "A-team" barrel horse.

Location: White Mountains of AZ | I always do other things with my barrel horses. I help out with our local ranchers a lot, I am on the drill team so I switch up my horses on that. They hardly ever see a barrel outside of the arena. I think it helps their mind and just lets them be horses! |

Location: 31 lengths farms | My gelding is by far a better barrel horse when I am using him for work on cows be it cutting, or stock horse classes or simply tracking cows out of the box at a roping (I couldn't rope to save my life so we simply track, LOL). In fact a few years ago when I was showing a lot of reined cow horse shows and then hitting some barrel races here and there with him that is when he was consistently in the 1D. |

Location: SE KS | they need more than 1 job. all of our horses ride pastures, chk cattle, goats, chk fence, we can rope off of all the horses, including the barrel horses. If they can't hack the job at our house, they don't stay. Everyone gets roped off of.
My main barrel horse is the hazing horse for my sons bulldogging horse. He is the only one that can keep up with him. So yes, we make a hazing run - switch tack and then get him ready for me to run barrels on, all in the same nite, same rodeo.

Location: Kansas | Chance is a barrel horse, trail horse, kid horse, whatever I need him to do. I don't rope, so we've not added that to his skill set, but I occasionally set up little jumps at home and work him over them. At rodeos I'll carry flags on him, and last year he got loaned out to a rodeo queen at URA Finals. She carried flags and chased cattle on him.
Clifford gets trail ridden and occasionally I'll put a little kid on him in a very controlled setting. He carried flags a lot this year and is a veteran grand entry horse.
Streak is proving to be a heck of a kid horse, and he also got to do all the events at the county fair horse show (showmanship, horsemanship, western pleasure, poles, barrels and the flag race) plus I've goat tied on him a time or two.
Joker isn't as versatile as Chance & Streak but I've goat tied on him and my sister-in-law rode him up & down the dirt roads and in the pastures at their place during the summer.
Here's two pics of Chance & Streak with their Wednesday afternoon buddies. :)

Location: London Ontario | I do everything with my horses but my MIL used to work for a very well respected rodeo family down here and she would school the barrel horses for them weekly. Now she is a dressage rider through and through, she's shown, trained and taught people from beginners to Gran Prix riders. At one point she had broken her elbow and was unable to ride for a few weeks, the owner had then came to her and begged her to get better ASAP as his horses and family weren't doing nearly as well when she stopped that "dressAGE BS" hahah. He told her he didn't know what or even care what she was doing but she better start again!!! I think its good for the horses as well as people to do different stuff!! |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Most folks around here just trail ride occaisonally at best. I think its best if they do more and believe they all can in the right hands. I sort cows and do trail events on my barrel horse when I can. Also have a cowbred prospect thats 4 this year and I've shown her halter, in hand trail, walk jog pleasure and horsemanship and she's been on cows at a clinic. Planning on putting at least another year of ranch shows on her before she sees a pattern. |

| I feed and water my horses. Does that count? I trail ride a bunch just not in the summer out here in AZ. Mine are afraid of cows and they are quarter horses from Texas. So I take them to team pennings when they have them. |

| Yessss. Before I trained mine on barrels his job was day working cattle. Then on to barrels, and roping both ends. The hubs ropes off him pretty often. Its pretty nice because it keeps him sane, and working good. Makes it much easier on me to boot. |

Location: SE KS | My newly minted barrel horse has done all kinds of things this year. He camped & trail rode in CO. Did local showdeo where I showed him in Western Pleasure, Barrels, Poles & flags. My neighbors daughter showed him in Reining & also ran flags on him. He has carried my nieces, nephews & cousins around when they come to visit & also is a rope horse too!!!
The more they do the better they are!!!!!
