Has anyone ever had an adverse reactions from omeprazole or any other medications when treating for ulcers? I am curious as my horse got very sleepy acting halfway through her meal and then just laid down for about ten minutes. She got up after this and finished her food and then acted normal for the rest of the evening. Just thought it was kind of strange.

I am starting a rescue on Organic Slippery Elm Bark Powder. There seem to be quite a few good reviews on the internet with success on equine ulcers. A friend of mine has had a lot of luck with her 2 daughters horses. You only feed 2 tsp per feeding. A pound of it cost me, with shipping, $31.00. He also gets Aloe Vera Juice.
We went through a 28 day cycle with UlcerGard on a mare that was scored a 9 on a scale of 1-10 by the vet. Never had any problems with it. She is now on Neighlox until it runs out. Then we will put her on the Slippery Elm Bark Powder along with her Aloe Very Juice.

omeprazole is actually very very safe even at 10 times the recommended dose. But what you describe is a symptom of ulcers. When the grain (carbs) hit the stomach the ulcers become inflamed. So many ulcer horses don't have great appetites, or attack their food at first and then back away or act colicky. The other thing that sounds like to me is possibly choking. Some horses get upset when they choke, others lay down or stand quietly in a corner until it passes (actually a good thing).
If this continues or it happens again I would definitely have a vet check her over. Could also be a tooth abscess that might hurt when she chews.
