1. How many horses do you have? we have 10 horses 2. Do you keep your horses at home or board? we keep them at home but I am shopping for a boarding stable in my college town where I'm living currently 3. What price would you expect to pay for board in your area? The cheapest I have found for partial care is $200 which includes turn out and AM feedings. I would rather not pay that much and let me feed in the AM and supply my own hay. 4. What are your top priorities when looking for a boarding barn? safety for my horses, good arena footing, good fencing 5. Do you take riding lessons? not regularly anymore but I used to ride with a trainer when I could. 6. Do you ever send your horse(s) to a professional trainer? when it's more than I can handle or if I want a horse broke for sure! |

1. I have 2 horses. 2. I board. 3. The average for my area is around $175 or so, but I don't pay that as I board with friends. 4. I don't have a good answer, as right now I supply all my feed and the my friends feed as I tell them, and I take care of all my horses' needs as well. 5. I've taken lessons from trainer's who have trained my horse, but nothing more. 6. Yes, I do send my horse(s) to a professional trainer. There are just some things I can't do myself. |

1. one
2. home at the moment
3. pasture board is ~200 per month stall is 300 or more
4. top priorities are clean, safe, knowledgeable owners, someone present during the day (employee/owner, etc.) or on a private property, arena at or near by facility, I prefer to do my own feeding or my own specified amounts so an owner who is ok with that. some place that isn't super busy all the time so my sensitive neurotic horse can have some down time without staring at someone all the time haha
5. I do not take lessons at this time, I used to ride for a professional reining trainer (10 years under him) and so lessons were basically every day lol
6. I do not send my horses to a pro, I used to ride with one and would bring my horses to ride or board them there and ride them there and generally get yelled at and helped so I guess my answer is a yes/no. Now that I don't work there anymore I do it all myself
I've also never had a barrel trainer or any help with the pattern.

1. We have 4 horses 2. Our horses are kept at home 3. Board in our area ranges from $185 (self care @ crappy facility) to $650 (enlish show barn) 4. Safety. I want to know that the manager/owner is on the property and doing checks on the horses. I used to manage a boarding facility and I was always out making sure horses were ok. 5. I don't take lessons anymore, but I'm always open if I need refreshing or different approaches 6. I don't send my horses to trainers. I do it myself. |

2. Do you keep your horses at home or board? I usually board but are in the midst of looking for a new house to buy, hopefully with a little acreage, we will probably have them at home during the summer and board during the winter.
3. What price would you expect to pay for board in your area? Anywhere from 150-250 outdoor board and 300 and up for indoor depending on how swanky the farm is.
4. What are your top priorities when looking for a boarding barn? Knowledgeable staff, few staff so they can actually notice a change in my horses if there is one, good quality hay, stalls cleaned correctly and often, nice arenas, lots of turnout.
5. Do you take riding lessons? Yes, MIL is a dressage trainer, I also take lessons from a reiner and a barrel racer. I don't think you can ever stop learning nor should you ever stop learning.
6. Do you ever send your horse(s) to a professional trainer? Sometimes for 30 days or so for a tune up. |

1. How many horses do you have? -3 2. Do you keep your horses at home or board? -Home, my family owns a boarding facility 3. What price would you expect to pay for board in your area? -300-350 for a pipe panel barn no shavings 4. What are your top priorities when looking for a boarding barn? -A safe facility with good hay and a good riding arena. A good atmosphere also makes a huge difference. I had to move home for school last year but before when I was living a few hours away looking for a boarding facility was terrible. Its so hard to find the right combo of convienent location, adequate facility, and the right group of people. I had two horses and was spending a fair bit of time and money there, so I wanted to enjoy myself while there. 5. Do you take riding lessons? -Yes a few times a year 6. Do you ever send your horse(s) to a professional trainer? -No, but my mom was/is a professional trainer until she basically retired a year or so ago. We have a full time trainer working out of our barn now. |

4. What are your top priorities when looking for a boarding barn? Never looked, but I'd want enough space for both my horses to be able to run around... preferably some grazing grass/ clean pens/shelter of some sort. I'd look at the other horses being boarded and look at their well being. I'd be picky!!
5. Do you take riding lessons? Riding no, I have attened a few barrel clinics though.

I have pasture board and I expect to pay $100 to $125 in the summer, and then extra for hay in the winter. 4. What are your top priorities when looking for a boarding barn? Well since I've never been at a "real" boarding barn, one of my top priorities would be that they have a heated indoor arena for winter riding. I would also want them to check on my horses at least once per day (and when I mean "check", I mean really look at them). Peace of mind is very important to me. 5. Do you take riding lessons? Once in a while I will take my horses to a reining trainer to work on advanced things such as spins and flying lead changes. I also take English hunter-jumper lessons twice a month in the winter. 6. Do you ever send your horse(s) to a professional trainer? I do the majority of my own training, but once in a while I will. I sent my colt (after I started him) for 30 days because they had indoor facilities to get him going in the spring, and I will be sending my older horse for reining training for 30 days to "brush up" on his reining moves and make it easier for me to get BOTH my horses in shape (if the reining trainer has one of them!!!). |

Full care board in my area is about $300/month 4. What are your top priorities when looking for a boarding barn? If I needed to board I would look for a facility like mine. Individual stalls with pasture access 24/7. I don't know of any like this. Usually they have stalls and separate turn out in groups. Rarely individual turnout. 5. Do you take riding lessons? No. But I know a lot of people like available activities at the place they board. 6. Do you ever send your horse(s) to a professional trainer? Yes I send 2 -3 year olds out for training.

1. 11 on the ground, 2 sold but they are making payments, 1 bought and making payments, 1 on the way (however you want to do the math)
2. I do both. I currently board my 2 year old filly to keep her moving well and we board my husband's rope horse. We switch these out and let some take breaks. We want to buy a place so we don't have to though.
3. I pay $300 full care for the filly and $100 a head for others (different situation). I much prefer the self care $100 option.
4. I want a solid area to ride in; pasture acreage for trail riding is also great. I want them to have turnout (not just stalled). And an ability to keep your horse away from others but see them. I don't want my filly hurt but I want her happier by visiting with other horses.
5. Not really.
6. Yes. Got two there now and another going in April.
ETA: When I say we do both, I also meant that we have a number of horses on family land. My broodies are at my MIL's and she is going into business with me. My husband keeps most of his (and our retirees) at my FIL's and we cycle them in and out.

| What is your view for your research paper?
The questions are quite vague, especially number 6 as most people buy their horses already started, this question can be interpreted two ways, and the way the question is worded it is a yes or no question. Also number 5 there is no definition of riding lessons, if you described this the answers would be more creditable, again yes or no question.
1)20
2)varies
3)350-500
4)indoor arena large enough for barrels, the ground worked in a regular manner, stalls cleaned daily, fresh shavings, lots of shavings, dust free hay, hay in front of horses 24/7, fresh water 24/7, turnout daily. Cleanliness, no hazards for horses.
5)depends on definition
6)varies |

1. 14 2. at home 3. When I boarded my horses where simply pastured, one place i stayed was free, another was $50 a month which i usually traded off for riding/hoof trimming work. Now if I was boarding I wouldn't even hope to find a place under $100 a month pasture board & in my area even more since I'm close to the oil field. 4. safety would be my first priority. Fences that are well maintained, horses kept in managable sized herds, a nice arena to ride in outdoor & indoor would be wonderful, people i trust to take care of my horses when i cant get there. 5. No 6. I train for a living but yes I have still sent my horses to others for specialized finishing work that I can't do at home. Last horse I sent out was trained for team roping, as I don't have a fenced arena or steers it wasn't something I could do myself. |
