Looking for suggestions or tricks to heal this up ASAP. I found her this morning and about passed out when I saw her legs, until I got closer and realized she just skun the hair off! Poor girl is pretty sore and swollen so lots of cold hosing and 2g of bute so far. I imagine it'll take a few days or so before she's no longer sore, but obviously much longer for the hair to grow back. Looking for tricks to get her hair growing back.

ETA no breaks in the skin

That's what I was thinking. . . I don't want to know what it would've looked like if the gate she got caught in didn't have round pipes.

Wow! how did that happen? you are "lucky," though its still an injury. Im sorry. :(

My fix all concoction for everything is to apply vetericyn and then alu-shield over the top. It works for me.

It appears she laid down and got her legs stuck in a gate. Found lots of hair by said gate, along with some green paint on her legs. Just a freak deal - Thank God it wasn't worse because it surely could've been a disaster.

I second the alushield! or any aluminum bandage spray, great stuff! I would use preparation H on it and then cover with the AluSpray.

My 4 year old did that in a round pen panel in early august except she did more damage than just hide missing.  I'll have to take some pics--except for a lingering knot on her cannon bone, you can't tell it ever happened.  I used Vetricyn and Sore No More poultice on her scrapes.

Furison, LA 200, DMSO and Vitamin E mixed in equal parts. It has to stay in a cool dark place and is only good for a couple days after it is mixed but it is amazing! I had a bucking horse get down in the trailer once and flayed her knee open. Because of where it was it couldn't be stitched but we used that concoction and she was back to bucking in 2 months. You couldn't even tell where the injury was!

I would use stressline. Love that stuff, use it on myself too.... Or if not available, vetricyn. And I also use udder creme to keep the skin from cracking.

There is a product I use called Dermagel. It soothes the skin, doesnt require bandaging and will help the hair grow back faster. Works well for open wounds and burns too.
Dr Williams at Lone star park got me started on it, it is great.
Valley vet Supply carries it.  Comes from Switzerland I think.

This will work. You'll need a spray bottle. mix Vinegar ,epsom salt, green alcohol, water equal portions. Spray the leg where needed swelling and cut area. Apply egg whites to skinned part of the leg. wash next day and apply again. swelling will be gone shortly and the hair will grow back.

I'm going to be the odd man out here but I probably wouldn't do anything but cold hose until the swelling is gone. The hair will grow back fine on its own.

Preparation H...Helps shrink the tissues!

Yep it works. I had a vet tell me the same thing 25 years ago I thought he was nuts. But I tried it on horse that had old scars that would not grow hair. Darn if it didn't work.

^^^^^This.  Our horse had a wound the size of your hand on his neck in August.  I washed twice a day and sprayed with Vetericyn and that stuff is amazing.  Granddaughter was riding him in a month and he has a little bitty scar now.

Here's my mare's before and after. The before pics were taken minutes after she hurt herself and looked way worse than this before it got better.  She has a sprinkling of white hair, but other than that you would never know. .

I'm with you. Cold hose until swelling is gone and if the skin starts cracking or getting dry looking after you're through with the cold hosing phase I would maybe put on some bag balm or corona cream or something moisturizing.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone

The reason I was hoping to get the hair growing back quickly is because she is my 2015 futurity prospect and I need to be hauling her to exhibitions. I just want to avoid the death glares when I am able to start riding her again :)

She was doing well this morning, seems happy - just sore. I cold hosed this morning and sprayed with vetericyn after, since its all I have on hand right now.
