Location: Oregon | So before I bought my gelding a girl was leasing him and supposedly running around 19s on barrels with room for improvement. She was running him in a Tie down, and a snaffle. I took him to our first race and he needed a lot of work on his pattern. So I took him back to basics did everything as if he had never ran before. Now he has a beatiful pattern at home not pushing or anything. I chose to switch him to a s hack as he ran harder at races with out a bit and seemed to listen better to me. Well one race we went to last summer he sort of freaked out on to the point of being uncontrollable. Running sideways and back wards almost rearing ect. (At that time I made a thread on here about if a horse can simply not like a specific arena since he had never done that before) So I concluded it was that arena. Well ever since then he sort of freaks out every where we go. He has got a lot better about it. But still does it only now its throwing our head up run sideways a little bit and go extremely wide around the barrel. He will come out of his freak out alot faster then before but still does it. Any way I was wondering if any of you thought maybe some other form of bit, hack, bonnet, or tie down would help him. I have rode him in a tie down before. I have had the chiro and massage guy out to work on him and he was sore/out in his poll and ribs and front shoulder. I have not had the vet out yet to check for anything but will be soon. | I don't change anything until the vet goes over the horse with a fine toothed comb, as I have learned whenever my horses start acting different it is due to pain.
Since you haven't had this horse long and don't know his history, I would start asking around to see how the horse was with the previous owners, and it would also question drugs |

Location: Oregon | I have owned him for a year and a half about. And I owned him for 6 months about before his first freak out on the pattern. I know he wasnt drugged, and she fed him alot of crap that really wasnt doing a thing for him. I didnt think at the time I bought him but he looked like crap. Lol. He now looks great. Besides the point but still. I talked extensively with the previous owner and the girl who used to lease him as well. And a vet will be put to look him over soon. |

| In a race setting, can you slow lope a correct pattern without him being crazy? |

Location: Oregon | I can slow him down to a trot/ or walk but at this point a slow lope is asking him alot apparently. |

Location: Oregon | At our last race he was going perfectly to the first barrel and wasnt going to do his freak out thing. I could tell by his body he was actually going to do what I asked around the barrel. But he slipped just a tiny bit going into it and thats when I knew he was going to do it. Its almost as if he loses just one ounce of concentration by seeing something or slipping and he goes f*** it we blew it we are done type of thing Lol!!! |

Location: North Dakota | I wouldn't put a tie down or any sort of restraint on his head for this issue. That would do nothing to solve the issue, just band-aid it. It could even make him feel trapped and cause more issues. If I had to guess I'd guess teeth. |

Location: Oregon | He does need his teeth done which will be done when the vet comes out. Along with his full exam. You think that could be a cause to some of his problems perhaps? |

he sounds sore.. hocks or poll even again. maybe the hack thru his poll out if your to handsy

Id get xrays on hind and check with chiro

Location: Mississippi | Didn't you say you were using a hack on this horse? I would check the hack to make sure it is operating correctly. I had the cable on the hack break once while running. It caused the horse to act like you are saying yours is doing. It also might be something sticking or poking him from the hack since it is random. Certain movements might cause it. Just a shot in the dark, but it's cheaper to check than going to vet first then finding out later that it's an equipment problem. |

Location: Oregon | All great ideas! Thank you I will check my hack and all my equipment. And yes I run him in a hack still. Its possible hisnpoll is out again since it constantly goes out. Im unsure of why that is also. (Another thing I want the vet to check). |
