It depends. I pay $150 for someone to collect and prep the semen for shipment. Then it can cost anywhere from $75-180 to ship the container to the mare owner. Most stallion owners do a flat rate where they are making money on some people and losing or breaking even on others.

Do you use disposable container or something like a reusable equitainer?

No I like to use a real equitainer. The blue ones. I priced the boxes and the price to ship them. The only time it costs less is when the mare owner ships them back. Then it's pretty inexpensive if they do 3 day or longer. However my vet is convinced the solid equitainers are of higher quality and are going to get the semen there in better shape. The reason I don't use the boxes is, I am the one that will have to eat the expense of shipping if the mare owners end says the semen isn't good. It costs ME the same for either container. I dang sure want to get the semen there in the best shape I can so I'm going to use the best container for the job. That said, I've found someone new to collect where it's more convenient for me. So we are going to use the boxes next year. I tried them a couple of times this spring and they worked just fine.

Whether I ship semen out or in I've found everyone wants their containers back. Even the "disposable" ones need to go back where they started.

I'm trying to figure out a good flat rate so everyone gets the best deal possible.

Find out what it costs to collect and prep the semen for shipment. That part is not going to vary. Then get an account with FedEx or UPS (however you are going to ship) and get some quotes. There are a few options that cost more or less depending on what you choose. Some locations they don't offer the same services. It depends on how remote the location is.

I haul my stallion approx 55 miles from my house to get collected. I usually burn approx $50 in fuel and its much easier for me to run on the tollway to miss Houston traffic so that is a cost of $30 also. Then the cost for the vet to collect and ship is $350...so do the math...a little easier if there is more than 1 mare.. Oh BTW there is no one closer for me to go to..lol..

collectiion or chute fees what ever you want to call them can be what ever. The 6666 charges $600 collection fee. Other charge $200. IMO I think that 600 is a total rip off.if you ship to 5 mares that collection you made a good profit for the day just off the collection fees. We collect and ship semen and AI mares and I would feel quilty charging these fees. I have been charged a collection fee on frozen on a stud that no longer stands at the ranch the frozen is being bought from. So it all depends on how bad you want a foal by that stallion.

When someone collects and freezes semen from a stallion they have to pay for the collection plus the extra expense of freezing it. Then they pay to store it until use. While they are charging you for the collection as if it's fresh cooled, it's probably the way they are recovering the costs above. Then the shipping costs a lot because the frozen semen shipping containers weigh a lot.
Can I ask you how many breeding doses did you get for your money? How many straws per breeding dose? I've always been curious how that works.
