Location: Oklahoma | My best friend texted me last night and said that her mom hadn't talked to her in a few days and she had just found out why. I said "oh, no! Why's that?" and she proceeded to tell me that her mom went in for a hair appointment last week and found out that I had 'blabbed' to the hair dresser that we (me, my best friend and her younger sister) are all going to Vegas in December for the NFR.
She said that she hadn't told her parents we were going because they will start to complain to her about spending money..... and as far as I know she pays all her own bills and doesn't get any help from her parents (she's 26, sister is 22)... so I'm not really sure why it should matter to them unless they just want them to be extrememly conservative with their money. My best friend said that she and her sister were going to tell them they're going, but they don't have to now since I already took care of it! ... we've known we were going since July and had our rooms/flights booked in August!
It just kinda rubbed me the wrong way that she said I 'blabbed'. I'm pretty sure I could 'blab' about things 10x worse when I go for hair appointment. The stylist loves to travel as much as I do and so we always talk about where we've been, where we want to go, or where we're planning to go. She's been to Vegas twice and it was just natural to talk to her about it!
Am I in the wrong? I'm not going to mention it to her again, but I know that she meant it as a little dig to me and I can't just seem to let it go! |

| I don't think you are in the wrong. If she didn't want you to tell anyone then she should have told you that. How are you supposed to know that a 26 year old doesn't want her parents to find out she's going on a vacation??? |

She never told me not to say anything, but I think she might be paying the way for her younger sister and I don't think her parents would approve at all about that... but not my circus, not my monkeys! |

| Absolutely not. Sounds like your friend and her parents need to grow up and let go a bit. My parents always stressed to me to live within my means and be conservative with my money, and I do keep that in mind and appreciate their guidance. However, I am an adult now, make my own money and pay my own bills. I will spend my money however I darn well please; in fact, SO and I are taking a vacation to Austin, TX this week, and when I told my parents, they wanted to load up and go with us! I wouldn't let it get to you, girl! |

She beat me to it!
I can't believe she hasn't told her mom yet and is your friend now mad at you?!?
Sounds like they have a petty bone and don't like nice things or trips....
So that being said I think I need to go since I know all the 1/2 price meal tomes, happy hours and have reward points I need to cash in!!
Seriously though. Can you eat a taco El Gordo for me please? I'd go back just for those!! |

She's a grown woman spending her own money! Her parents can get over it!
If she owes them money, I can see them being pissed about it. Other than that, it's none of their business what she spends her money on. |

Yeah, I'm just kinda curious about that aspect, but not a boundary I'm going to get even close to! I know that her parents don't like for people to know when they're out of town (afraid of thieves coming around when they're gone & I think that's a valid reason), but their daughters live two hours away and no one locally even knows where their house is. I was just really taken aback that she hadn't mentioned it! They're very close, but I guess not in all aspects!! I don't really blame her mom for being upset about having to "hear it at the beauty shop", I'd be upset, too.... But I'd be more upset that it's been planned for so long! |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | Do NOT feel bad about this! We all share happy news like that! It's not your fault that she has a dysfunctional relationship with her mom. The fact that her mom decided to be passive aggressive and not even speak to her daughter for a few days...wow...that's like emotional blackmail by the mom. Good lord. She and her mom need to do some serious growing up in the relationship department if a little vacation planning can cause this much drama.
I sure hope your friend doesn't blame you for her family issues. She could have warned you...she didn't. So not your mistake at all. |

| Some parents are way over protective, and can't let go of the kids when they are no longer kids. My grandparents were that way, and my mother is that way. When I tell her I am off to Vegas or where ever she wants to know everything. I keep my boundries up and say, I will call if I need anything. Sounds like she hasn't set the boundries with her parents. It won't be easy for her or a one time thing. You did nothing wrong, there are plenty of people like her parents in this world. |

Hopefully she realizes she's wrong and apologizes for accusing you of having a big mouth before your trip! |

This. None of the parents' business what two ADULTS do with their money. Now if the girls come back owing money to the casino or something...also NOT the parent's problem!! |
