I have a quarter in my pocket. It's just a 25 cent coin but when I pulled the change out of my pocket to pick out 37 cents in a convenience store I noticed this one looked different. On the way back to the bike I inspected it. The first thing I checked was the date. 1942. This coin has been in circulation for more than 70 years and it looks it. There are parts where it's difficult to read the stamping anymore. And the metal is different too. By grannies............it may be silver. I wonder where it's been. Could it have been in a young man's pocket as he got his first leave after boot camp? Maybe one of Doolittle's Raiders used it to buy a hot dog as they trained in Columbia SC. Was it a lucky quarter that a young paratrooper carried with him as he jumped into France? Has this quarter ever been to the movies? Was it used to buy a coke for a pretty girl? How many toll booths have seen this coin? I sat on the bike and just looked at it for a long time. This quarter has seen some scary times. Times when it seemed America might fight and lose World War II. It's seen angry times and some really sad times. Was it in Dallas in 1963? Was it at Kent State in 1970? Could it be a young man was holding his lucky quarter and watching Challenger rise in 1986? It's just a quarter. But it's a quarter that has been around. If it could talk it could tell the story of America. I think I'll keep this quarter for a while. I think I'll see if it'll keep talking to me.

I used to work at a coin shop. We regularly sold coins that dated back to the 1700's. We also dealt with Roman coins and older foreign coins. I used to think about what all they had seen and where they had been. It was always interesting listening to the stories that the people who came in to sell their coins/gold/silver, too.

I would bet that quarter has been sitting in someone's dresser drawer as they knew what it's worth and one of their kids took it to go buy candy...Not to be a Debbie Downer but I had a friend that owned a convenience store and it happened all the time.
