Location: Oregon | I tried taking the best pictures possible but it was dark outside so im sorry if they arent the best. My moms horse broke out it a bunch of oozing swollen spots all over him. Any one ever dealt with this or have any idea what may have caused this? At first I thought bug bites but all over like that? Idk any help would be appreciated. He is older then 25. So im worried about him. |

I had an old guy that would get those oozy "bursting" hives ranging from tiny to half dollar sized. Don't give Dex if he has a fever, steroid can make some things worse if he's having some kind of response or sickness and has spiked a fever. |

| My horse had just a few spots like that and I used Malaseb anti-fungal shampoo as directed every day for a week, then every other day for a week as directed, then 3 more times the following week and it went away. You may even try, on a small spot to test, Mane-n-tail because it has sulfur in it. But if he is getting worse, I'd call the vet. |

Oh just a thought, I thought them little monsters were every where, but still sounds like it could be ants, when mine would get into fire ants this is what happen to them also the little raise bumps that would oozz sappy stuff. |

thanks. the list of what i have tried is long......one supplement is so far working on the one horse (fingers crossed) but it doesn't help the others....so im trying lysine(on 2), i have also read that black sunflower seeds help, so im goin to try that on a couple......they have access to trace mineral blocks and i tried one of the big tubs(which i hate btw) and it did nothing but get them covered in molasses..........

| I have a few horses that get these every fall too. I've never had them looked at by a vet, but probably should. It seems strange that it only happens in the fall and if it was a deficiency of some sort wouldn't that happen at any time of the year? My horses are on dry lot and eat the same thing 365 days of the year. |

Location: Oklahoma | The bugs get really bad in the fall because they know winter is coming and they're going to die....I have one that has a fly allergy and he gets these all over....but I also had a friend whose horse had a bacterial infection and had bumps that looked the same, and she had to give him some kind of extra strength antibiotic to get rid of it. At his age, I'd be taking him to a vet and having some blood drawn to make sure if it was an infection or not. If it's just bug bites, they can tell you how to best address it since he's an old guy. You can't treat them like young healthy stock. |

Location: Oregon | So sorry I hadnt updated every one! I had the vet out and it was an allergic reaction to something but the cause was unknown as we didnt change anything. But what the vet thought was weird was just a couple days earlier he went to see a horse a couple miles from us with the exact same thing and they hadnt changed anything either. So he told us not to change anything we ate doing since the swelling was going down and oozing stopped. So we cleaned with iodine and put vetricyn on them he is almost all better now! Thank you every pne for the replys. |

Chiggers are a very annoying tiny, biting bug found in the midwest. They burrow into the skin and we found they only seem to be able to do so when they have some type of clothing to push against, like elastic on socks or pants tight against the waist and legs. I don't know if they bother animals or not but they are a nuisance to humans. I dealt with them for years in Missouri and never actually saw one. |

you never heard of chiggers!!!....... Nasty little bugs. You're to far north to know what they are I guess. They are larvae of a mite and they live in grassy areas or near water. Once they bite you it inserts an enzyme in your skin that causes little red bumps that itch and sometimes resemble a blister. I spray our yard every year for them and fleas and ticks. |

The only time we had them was when our yard was covered in carpet grass, for some reason they loved the carpet grass. |

They are BOT flies. They will go away but you might want to worm them. They are the bots that get into their system and hatch. They get out that way.
I think that's only in humans.... Once a horse ingests the larvae it stays in there stomach for a while and then is passed through in their feces and the larvae stays in the feces until it emerges as a fly and starts the process over. |
