Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | A comment that was posted today got me to thinking about this.
When you hear something said - good or bad- about someone well known in the industry that you don't know how much of an impact does it have on your opinion of them professionally?
When you hear or know something derogatory about someone, when do you decide to say something and when do you decide to stay quiet?
Do you you think passing or vague comments or gossip have that much impact on a person's career in the barrel industry? Why?

When you say involves you, do you mean they ask your opinion or you're involved in a sale, etc, or you're mentioned somehow? "Involved" can have a lot of different levels and meanings. |

| If it was done to me directly or someone I am close to I will share my experience. If it's just hear say, I keep my mouth shut! Comments and gossip can most definitely impact someone's career and reputation. I know I think twice about someone if I hear lots of negative comments or gossip about them, I wouldn't know whats true or not and I wouldn't want to take the chance of it being true and finding out the hard way. I work hard for my money. |

My perspective......unless my name is actually mentioned in someone's dramatic issue, I try to keep myself out of it.
It could be anything from a sale, to knowing the girl who races...etc. I know a gal who buys/sells horses..."horse trader." lately there have been several posts about her that have been saying nasty nasty things about her, I did in fact open my mouth and argue with the "buyer" who was accusing her of drugging the horse....a month after she sold the gelding to her.
Rumors, gossip...etc.....can make a huge impact on not only your reputation, but can hit your character as well. It sucks when someone is talking crap about you...especially if it isn't true. |

This- but I also wait to reserve judgement for those that have a bad reputation until I see it happen for myself (not TO myself) or know exactly what went on. And I keep everyone at a distance until I deem them trustworthy or know their skills as a trainer/rider from my OWN observations and what I hear from the person in question's mouth directly. Rumors are horrible- and most of the time the person spreading them is just as bad as the person being talked about. |

Location: Oklahoma | I recently refused to show my 1D horse to a lady because I felt he wouldn't be a good match for her daughter after talking to people who had seen the girl ride. She got extremely rude with me, and implied that the reason I wasn't showing her the horse was because there was something wrong with it....said her vet had talked to MY vet and knew the truth....well, it just so happened that I was standing in my vet's office at the time and asked if anyone had contacted him about my horses recently and he said "no". When I asked her what this "truth" was that she knew, she refused to answer....said she didn't know what my problem was. I know she's probably now spreading lies that I was selling an unsound horse or some other kind of crap about me, but I can't worry about it. I did nothing wrong and there was nothing wrong with the horse....I just didn't feel it would be a good fit, and he's a lot of horse and I didn't want to be responsible for getting a kid hurt, and because I was responsible, now I'm getting rumors spread about me. I just have to hope that enough people know me and my horses that they won't listen to her. :/ |

| Here are my thoughts:
People in the horse industry are always going to talk crap. A lot of people have a lot of opinions, and different ways of doing things, and the majority of the time you can't keep everyone happy.
If you want to be successful then be the type of person that when someone says something bad about you, the majority of people would say or think that doesn't sound like that person....
People are always going to talk, as long as you have integrity, and are honest, the majority of people will see through the gossip. So I personally do not feel as if gossip can really have a large impact on someone professionally.
This also goes back to making sure that we as barrel racers do our own homework on trainers etc. instead of basing what we know off of gossip or she said he said.... just like when you purchase a horse you should do your homework, I think it is the same thing with trainers-otherwise you may end up giving yourself the short end of the stick just off of assumptions.
As far as saying something myself it would really depend on the situation. Sometimes comments only stir the pot and makes things worse, sometimes it opens up someones eyes. |

| I think it shows a lack of class to trash talk. I tend to not participate if I don't know the person, but if I do and I disagree I will try to say something about the person. Nothing shuts a gossip up faster than someone responding to their attempt to tear down with praise. |

| People talk-Period. While we like to think rodeoing is different, it is still a professional sport. When someone at the top level of competition does something dirty-it WILL get out.
If you decide to compete at that level--DON'T do anything you wouldn't want your fans, your family, the public etc. to know about. If you don't want to get caught, don't do it!!
Rumors usually don't just materialize out of thin air-there's usually some truth in it somewhere!

Location: Prosser, WA | To me it depends. If I hear over and over about a seller that has no problem selling a dangerous horses to kids, I will pass that information on to anyone I can. Otherwise I will only tell someone that specifically asks or is a good friend. Then I will repeat the information adding that it was only something I heard so proceed with caution. |

Do I still have the same bad opinion about the person? Oh heck yes. But I don't tell every person I come across. NO. That's the difference. |

I don't trust many people. So there you go... however, if I hear a lot of different rumors about someone from a large number of people, I will question their integrity and take every precaution if I were in a position to do business with them. |

DITTO ^^ The fiance likes to say I have a rolodex memory because I tend to keep in mind what others have said to me but I don't pass the info forward. I keep it in my mind only to help me decide whether to trust someone or not .... There is no point in passing gossip along, it doesn't help anyone. |

I'm the only person I know on a personal level who will make it a point to come right out and either tell people to shut it, or that I just plain don't want to hear it. And I will be the first to speak up in a group of strangers when they start talking about rumours, tell them they are exactly that, rumours, and walk away.
I will NOT tolerate it. When I do hear something derogatory about someone well known, I don't ever think less of them. What the hell ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? In a fair court of law, not by some person who thinks they are judge and jury.
Now actions are another issue. They speak WAY louder then any word even spoken. But again, if I don't see it with my own eyes then it's just rumour |
