Location: Alabama | I have a 6 yr old mare that has a FIRST barrel bashing problem. It's NOT pain. I can't NOT hold her off I use inside rein and out. What bit could I use to help??? She's somewhat moody towards bits. She is very soft in the mouth and will slow work all day long. It's when we are at a run she acts like I'm not even up there and power houses threw me. She is a 1d mare when she wants to be. When I can hold her off.
If the barrel is set far down the arena forget it.
HELP!!!!
I mainly looking for a bit that I can possibly help keep her up. Or any exercises I can do.
I don't have a videos new phone and only on my Facebook. Only have one from last night but they didn't get my first barrel.
I have used a draw bit, have a short shank gag now. No tie down. Works great In draw reins. I've down the stop and turn thy opposite way. Go past the barrel. Counter arc etc.
Please please any help. I'm so over it. |

| I don't know if this is going on but my gelding did this to me on my second... kinda a know it all and I really don't think he was doing it to be naughty. He would do slow work all day long, moved off my legs, counter bend, bend through the ribcage, two track, the whole nine but when we started running it was like he threw himself into the turn. I could hold him up.
I went to a clinic and she noticed that he would toss his nose right before the turn (ever so slightly and within his stride so I never noticed) but it took my rein away. My hands were much farther down the rein around the barrel than they originally were coming into it.
All we did was worked him to the issue barrel and when he dove down like that and took my rein, we shortened the rein, dug that leg in and made him circle it until he stayed light and got off my hands. If he picked up and listened, he was walked off and rewarded. It just took practice of him knowing he doesn't get to boss me around. We still have to revisit this once in awhile but haven't hit a second barrel since this discovery besides fluke stuff.
I also switched to the cervi dogbone short shank. But I practice him in anything from a goosetree simplicity to a cj ryan to a wonder bit to a snaffle.
Also should add, I really have to have my body position right and I cannot setup too soon. I usually pick a spot on the rail and "ride to it" until im ready for him to actually begin his turn. |
