| I've had it logically explained to me both ways, so now I'm confused. When you are hooked up to sewer and plan to spend awhile, do you leave your sewer line open, or keep it closed and just dump the tank when it's full?

Location: west of East Texas | Keeping it closed also helps with the odor that sometimes comes back in. We also keep the gray water closed until after we dump the black water. This gives us an additional rinse through all the hoses. |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | Keep it closed and use plenty of water. When it starts getting full you can dump it easily without the solids sitting in your tank. Leaving it open will only get sewer gas in your tank so every time you flush the gas will then come in your trailer. |

Location: Texas | Yes, keep it closed until you leave. You can also dump a bag of ice in the tank if you suspect a buildup not draining out when you get close to a dump station. With the ice in there The moving around will help break up the solids more easily |

| Thanks everybody! Ick- I hadn't thought about the odpr coming back up from the sewer- yuk. I thought the only reason to keep it shut was so that your valve handles wouldn't get dirty and stuck, but the other reasons you stated sounded good too! And nice tid bit about the ice cubes! Thanks! :) |

Yep! Always leave it closed. When you use your chemicals for the toilet it needs a chance to break the waste down. |

Location: Too far from home | I've always been told to let it get full and keep some water in it just to have a little velocity when you "dump" (the trailer...LOL). I was emptying it regularly and had issues with odor. Once I started letting it get FULL before I emptied it, I didn't have any more issues. It seems a little contradictory, but full and closed is better than empty and open. |
