I looked at a barrel prospect last night and really liked him. But he is HUGE and his height somewhat startles me, concerns me. I live in Minnesota and a lot of the races are in small indoors. I have a gelding I have measured that is 16.1h. This horse seemed like he was that tall or taller. The lady selling was unsure of his exact height and I had nothing with to measure.

He's an 8 year old quarter horse that was retired in July. Won some $112K.

I'll attach a picture of his pedigree. Do you think there is a certain height that is just too tall for barrel racing or that it hinders them in anyway?

I don't think so. Lyndee Stairs just took 5th in the 1D Futurity at the WPRA World Finals in Waco on a 16.2h half brother to my colt (both by her stallion Otro Fracaso). You can look up videos on YouTube if you want, TwoLinksToFirewater is his name. He looks like he turns quick like a little horse and powers through the straights. I think the key to having a big, tall horse like that as a 1D barrel prospect is a short back and strong shoulder and hip. Think: Short wheel base and all wheel drive.
