why do horse show people take out rows of stalls at big horse shows (like aqha world, congress, etc) and put shavings down in the aisle? Do they turn the horses out so they can move around more? Is it to keep them clean? Do they just like their privacy? I was walking around at the aqha world on Friday (did a lot of walking just to get out of the barn to an exit since each ranch takes and blocks an entire row! Lol) and I had never seen this done before!
It's cheaper than mats easier on the horse. Some of these horses are there for 2/3 weeks standing on concrete so any break they can get helps.
Do they tie in the isles for long periods? Wow, seems like 2- 3 weeks worth of clean shavings bedded deep could buy some nice stall mats.
Most people set up an area that has mats and a set or two of cross ties the rest is shavings. If you stay ahead of the urine and manure and pick thru out the day you really don't have to add much on a daily bases. Most of the big ranch's and big trainers have a full time stable hands just for this. It is not so much the cost of the mats it is the fact that that many mats requires a lot of labor to set up and break down and another truck to carry them around. Shaving can be bought on site and disposed on site.

There are a few that do this at Paint world but you don't see it much. Most of these show horses will not pee outside of a stall. Some of the barn help are really good and then you have others not so great. You may see a stall spotless and not many dirty shavings at all, and the next stall you walk by is filth! Some of the trainers do have mats under the truck load of shavings. I was talking to a halter horse guy over the weekend, horse came from Fl, and had been to a show on the way to Texas in MS for about a week. So that makes it hard on them.
