I am looking at a very nicely built TB that is off the track.  He looks like a QH.  I have run race bred QH and enjoyed working with them.  But I have never had a TB.  So I am wondering if there is really any differnce.   Any input would be appreciated.

I am interested to hear opinions on this as well. I just started patterning an OTTB and I absolute love him. He is smart, athletic, has picked up the patttern so quickly and has an awesome work ethic. We have done some slow loping exhibitions but have not attempted a run for a time yet. I am hoping to do that soon.

edited: mine looks like a large QH as well instead of a TB

We have a TB mare that was given to us because she couldn't run any farther than 5 furlongs.  She is gorgeous, smart, athletic and has a work ethic like no other horse I have seen, she loves to train!  After watching her turned out in a large paddock this summer, I am absolutely convinced she would make a jam up barrel horse.

If I had one that was athletic, willing and looked the part I would not hesitate to put them on barrels.  I would steal our mare to ride but hubby wants babies out of her.

In my experience the TB can be harder keepers and require more season maintenance (blankets, fly sheets etc.) to maintain weight then the running bred Qh's. They can also require a higher fat/calorie diet to maintain their weight and can easily drop but take a while to gain.

Aside from that saddle fit can be a bit more difficult depending on wither height. In terms of training I found no glaring difference between them.

If you do get one from the track I would suggest treating for Ulcers as soon as you bring them home. Just so it gets off to a good start with you.

Best of luck and if you get him post pictures :)
