| I'm bored today. So in between rooms of house cleaning, I'm cruising BHW. I see many horses with something wrong with them offered as broodmares. How often do the traits of the mare show up in the foal?
Say a mare is navicular at 10, will the foals be navicular at an early age as well? Is there anything that can be done to prevent the unsound trait, such as supplements or corrective trimming as a foal?
I have 2 geldings, so no breeding here, but thought this might be an interesting topic for discussion. Some day I might buy a mare! |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | Some traits do carry and probably shouldn't be a broodmare. In my case I have one broodie. She has navicular but it was the cause of a bad farrier, not anything to do with her confirmation. I'm also cleaning rooms....what else do you do on a frigid, 40 mph windy day. |

| It all depends on the mare/horse.
I had one mare no conformation flaws in her but by number 3 foal we noticed her foals had the flaws of the sire. I really had to ask different questions and critique after this. The other pro to her was she always threw color of the stallion too.
Navicular can be caused from prolonged contracted heels, poor blood supply, etc, some even say too small of foot for the size of horse.
This is where the backyard breeder discussion comes into play, by breeding less then stellar (unsound) horses are we weakening the gene pool and creating more useless horses in an already overpopulated world?
I would be looking at breeding, conformation, and performance and/or producing record and see if it fit into my program.
Bows/tears I don't think of those as genetic mostly wear and tear injuries |

| So I have a question to add to the genetic- nevicular discussion. Would you breed a navicular horse with small feet that was NOT taken care of well as a young horse (probably caused or supported the navicular onset) if that horse had given you a few very good reasons to breed it?
