I have to say the holiday season is my favorite time of the year. I am blessed that my mother is The Southern Lady Cooks, she makes the most amazing food. I do however bring the barley casserole which is a tradition in our family.  She will make her Jam Cake, which I look forward to all year!

My 25 year is a fantastic cook and does all the cooking.   She is planning on turkey, braised rabbitt, lamb chops.  She sends me the shopping list, half the stuff she uses I have never heard of and takes me forever to find- I have to google it to see what I am looking for.  Last year we had Welsh rarebit (had never heard of it)  as a side dish- OMGoodness  was it deliscious.  Everything is usually paleo, except for the Welsh rarebit- it was worth it,  but still great,

Here is the recipe.  Be prepared for the color.  We love it, but I am known for going crazy with cranberries relish recipes.  I am generous with the horseradish because we love it, and love it with the Smoked turkey. It goes very well with pork also.

We're not a turkey eating family. So We are fixing Prime Rib, twice baked potatoes, bacon wrapped asparagus, possibly roasted brussel sprouts with garlic, and homemade garlic bread. Then some homemade carmel cheesecake. MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

We usually have an all traditional dinner.... twice.  Usually at 1pm with my family and then with my husbands family at 5-6pm.
I usually make mashed potatoes (love the Pioneer Woman's, but open to new suggestions if anyone has a kick a$$ version!) and kitty litter cake... but it's the same version you find if you Google. This one is more of a pudding.

For my husbands side (less people so more slack to pick up) I usually do:
Mashed Potatoes
Deviled Eggs
Roasted Carrots
Dressing (my grandma's... I love it!)
Kitty Litter Cake
other misc. dessert

I love, love, love to cook, but I hate just making dinner for my husband and I.    I love for it to be an all day affair in the kitchen!

I am the "Lucky" individual that gets to cook for 12 this year.  I'm going traditional....Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean cassaerole, pumpkin pie and lemon dessert.  Turkey gets cooked in the roaster, stuffing in the crock pot, potatoes boiled and mashed and into the crockpot and greenbean crap in the crockpot.  I found a pumpkin pie recipe for a 9x13 cake pan and lemon dessert is in a 9x13 cake pan.  That's it.....

SG, I make a flour rue, please use real butter, add some white pepper(a little goes a long way), Add chicken bullion or ham stir add a little milk(keep it like a paste).  Now here is where I keep this not a calorie buster side.  Add your frozen pearl onions, set temp on low as the onions de-thaw and cook it makes the sauce.  Most recipes call for half and half or heavy cream, this is my lower calorie version, and every year I get rave reviews from our dinner guests. If you want the peas in this nothing changes except the amount of rue you make.  If it is to thick add a little more milk.

We keep it pretty basic..MIL makes the Turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing and I will bring deviled eggs, GB Cassarole and Peach Cobbler.  I thought about making Pioneer Womans sweet potatoe cassarole but very few eat it and I thought it would be a waste.

Going traditional nothing too fancy . Turkey , Ham , Mashed potatos & turkey gravy , green bean casserole w/ prosciutto & mushrooms, salad , rolls and cranberry sauce . This year I'm going to try making a cornbread stuffing with country gravy that I saw on The Chew. Pumpkin pie & a berry pie are also a must. Not sure how I'm going to time everything , we only have a single oven.

Go buy you a convection oven, around $120, you can cook your casseroles in it or pies.

I have an electric roaster that I've baked cakes and pies in when I've had something else in my oven.  Its cheap, less than $50, and it really comes in handy.

Last year I had 21 at my table and this year it's only going to be 6 to 8 this year (I promise I didn't make anyone sick - other family obligations for the rest of them this year, hehe) but still making the full meal deal -  turkey, green beans (cooked all day with bacon), relish tray, rolls, dressing that I could eat all of by itself (I don't put mine in the turkey), pumpkin pie, and a german chocolate pie.  My mother in law is bringing a ham and the mashed potatoes, I will make the gravy from the turkey drippings.  I can feel myself foundering on all this food just thinking about it!

My mom does most of the cooking, but usually everyone coming tries to bring an appetizer or dessert. This year, mine is going to be bourbon pumpkin pie. Did a test run making it this past weekend, and it was a-mazing.

I have the perfect solution....

www.honeybaked.com  Fantastic meals for 2  just heat and serve and THEY do taste like homemade

And OMG.....it will be the best Thanksgiving meal you've ever had!  If we had one here locally that is definitely what i'd do!  Their ham and their turkey are to die for!!!  Plus, you can get all of your sides there too and voila, dinner is served!

Oh you know i'm going to have to anyway.  Hubby is all fired up about smoking a ham and turkey in that new smoker.  He's also reeeeeally wanting to make a pecan pie from scratch using our own pecans....i'm out on that.  I'm in charge of mashed potatoes and stuffing.  LOL

I wish ya'll were coming too....the invitation stands!

F Bar - 2014-11-18 3:35 PM Going traditional nothing too fancy .

That is a great idea ! We will have to grab one.
We have a nice smoker I was hoping to do something in but I'm not sure if we could get away with doing Turkey in that , I'll have to google ! Would be a good excuse to spend some time outside since everyone is bringing their own dogs here on top of it all....

We are also having dinner the night before at one side of the families and I insisted on bringing the green bean casserole...my question is do you bring it made but not cooked yet or do you cook it ahead when at someone elses house?

That is what I was thinking . I'd hate for it not to be fresh , just felt weird using their oven if they had things planned out.!

I saw that they did a beer can Turkey on the grill.
Has anyone had any experience with putting the Turkey on your grill instead of the oven? I may be missing something but they did lemon , a dry rub , stuffed it on a beer can and then poured beer in a tray under it and cooked it for 3 hours?

My ex-father in law did one on the grill one time and it was delicious!

OT-I noticed you are located in North Idaho. Whereabouts?
