How many of you feed daily electrolytes? How many give paste electrolytes on the weekends at races? Had an acupuncture/chiro guru man thats been going around to the big shows work on our ponies and he was shocked that we were not adding electrolytes to their feed. He was an advocate of jugging....not too sure how I feel about it though. Curious to see everyone's thoughts on feeding daily electrolytes. Also, he advised a tablespoon of baking soda in their feed daily as a pH balancer.

He was very big on getting out the toxins and advised me to try french green clay for ulcer treatment. He said it was similar to DRAW but better. I never thought about the metals in baking soda tho...

Asked my leg man who is a race horse vet. He said that any electrolytes they lose should be replaced by a good feeding program. Asked him about baking soda, especially in regards of a preventative of tying up and he said that you can really mess up their mineral/electrolyte balance using it. So I stay clear of both. I do this in cases of excessive heat and sweating electrolytes could be called for.
And jugging of my horses has been with DMSO with some vitamins and maybe some minerals.....been so long I'm not sure what we used. I do remember that the DMSO was supposed to help with general soreness from hard use and hauling. Stinks tho.

If I have one that doesn't eat or drink good when being hauled I give them In the Zone by Animal Element the night before and the morning ofwhich is has shilejite which is an electrolyte, but it gets them eating and drinking and I dont worry about them being dehydrated - especially when its hot in the summer.
