3yo that got her head stuck somewhere and in the process of getting it out banged up the nerves on her face paralyzing her lips for a while. She has about 80% control but only about 50% strength now. She gets free choice grass hay, baled alfalfa twice a day and 2lbs Renew Gold a day with THE MM. She lost about 75# in a month & half. I know that's not much but she only weighs 900 so its easy to see.

Anything y'all recommend that I can add to my feeding program or do you think just time?

She was getting free choice grass hay and 1# renew gold a day.

I would add 1/2 cup of canola oil rather than more grain. That will help a lot. Good luck!

Some people don't like canola oil as the omega fatty acid ratio some say will promote inflammation.

I would look at giving coconut oil, flax oil, as these are high in antioxidants.

I would also increase the protein content as horses need extra protein to heal and to grow.

Since she is 3 it may be worth getting her teeth done especially since she has a neurological impairment in the face.

thank you. I forgot about coconut oil. I have to go get some tomorrow anyways. What she is getting currently is pretty high in protein but I could up her alfalfa. Her teeth are up to date but I am going to have them checked out/ floated ect again but I was told (I work at an equine vet) by the vets I work with to battle 1 thing at a time. We are just now "getting her face back" so it will be teeth checking time shortly. I just know regardless of what the teeth look like she is in need of gaining that weight back.

Have you tried using a feed bag? A friend of mines horse did this a few years ago and this helped her dramatically

I would add cocosoya oil and FORCO. Sounds like she's getting enough good hay, but needs a little something extra.

I was also going to recommend cocosoya, and I see that someone else mentioned it.  I have an older pony that I couldn't put weight on, no matter what I tried, and this stuff works wonders on her.  I get it in a Smart Pak from smartpakequine.com.  I also have an older gelding that has had some trauma to his face, and it affected his mouth and ability to chew.  They need a good pelleted food, since they are unable to completely grind grain like they should.
I don't know if it's allowed to post a link to a product, so if not, the mods can delete it.  This is the cocosoya.
