Location: NE Texas | Hi All,
First off, sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place or if this topic was recently discussed. I'm a newbie to the site!
Long story short.... I grew up riding but got out of it around the age of 20 (for school and work) and now approaching 40 I'm getting back into it. My mom raises thoroughbred races horses (slowing getting out of it due to age/health reasons) and she gave me her favorite filly/mare that she raised. I've had Grey Baby (registered name "Silver Blush") for a month and shes learning the woah-stop pretty well - our biggest problem has been learning that she needs to have brakes. She only raced once but was in training for several months last year and earlier this year. She's already starting to flex and move off leg pressure.
I grew up riding Quarter Horses and I did really well in Playdays/Barrels - just about any agility sport and I was up for it! My real question is - what is everyone's thoughts on an almost 16 hand high thoroughbred filly/mare doing well against the Quarter & Quarter crosses?
Pic attached - she's not as tall and lanky as some thoroughbreds. I guess at the end of the day I really won't know until I do it. Starting the barrel pattern this weekend - of course at a walk and trot so it will be a while before I see if she can "burn & turn" with the rest of them.
All feedback is appreciated!
Thanks much, Charlie

Location: Central Texas | I am patterning an OTTB right now and I can't be more pleased with the way he is handling things. He is 16 hands and basically looks like your normal TB, nothing short about him. He handles/feels a little different than my QH's on the pattern and I like the way he is turning out so far. I know several people who have run TB's or TB crosses and do well. Go for it and enjoy yourself and the experience. |

Agreed Total Performace! And lots of trail riding... I will not be running her for a long time as she already knows very well how to do that. I'm in no hurry. |

Nope.. not far at all. Don't know anyone else that rides yet as I'm just getting back into it. Plan on joining the local riding club to get my feet wet. Do you know of any barrel practice events around? I'm talking like slow walk/trot practice. I don't have an arena but would like to start getting some haul time on her just to get her used to it (and of course to pattern at different areans). |

I'd say if she seems to work good and you two click, why not make a go of it?? I've seen some big, big horses clock in the low 17's. Just make sure once you get her running, you can get her to stop!!! But she is very nice looking!!!! :) |

They were doing barrel/pole practice every other Tuesday at the cowboy church in Fairlie, Tx. Also Blue Ridge has a good riding club and they have monthly playdays. Lots of ACTION at those and a good place to get a colt seasoned. Terrell has 2 arenas and they have exh's and a jackpot on Tues and Thurs but it may be a little more serious than what you're looking for right now. The deal at the cowboy church is usually pretty laid back and free, so that would be good. You might check with other cowboy church's over by you and see if they offer something different. :)
I look forward to meeting you and hope we can get together and ride sometime! |

| Thoroughbreds can make awesome barrel horses! Dreaming of Three produces the Ultimate X Showdown, a 100 day trainer challenge just for ottb's, to showcase their talents in this arena! We've had some awesome barrel horses produced from this event in the last two years and are hoping we can hold a third year if we gain sponsors. |

Thanks and I agree! Her dam was a very stout built thoroughbred and her sire was a very well built stallion - she got his finer points and her mama's bigger hips. lol
The whoa/stop is getting better - reading some articles online really helped me to teach her to back w/out pulling on the reins and to get her to give at the poll - so much more info at your finger tips than there was 20 years ago! She's actually starting to slide stop from a gallop after just a week... didn't expect that! But agreed - she can get worked up (hot) so want to make sure the stop is there before I ever let her go (and that will not be anytime soon).

Thanks for the info. I actually used to be a member of the Kaufman County Sherrif's posse riding club back in the early/mid 90s (the saddle in the pic posted is one that I won in 1995 for year end high point for my age group). We rode at Mystic Acres in Kaufman. I've been to a few barrel events back then at Terrel Classic arena - I'm just not ready for that level yet.
I was going to join Farmersville riding club, but I'm thinking Blue Ridge might be a better fit (a bit more competitive). We watched the rodeo they had their last fall - was a lot of fun. I'll hit up the local riding clubs so see if they have any info on practices during the winter months.
I don't know how I feel about the Cowboy churches - I don't want any pressure to attend Sunday services! :p
Thank you!!! |

It's a nice little town. I've only lived there 4 years - really don't know anyone as I commute to Dallas for work. Grew up about an hour away and have been away from horses for so long.
My sister lives in Gillette, WY - funny.

Never ran past a barrel in his life. I can jump trees with him. Cross rivers. Super super light in the body and face. And he's so sweet. He is a stall walker but thats his only vice. Ive had him 13 yrs and he will die on my place. As far as whoa. He was no harder to train than any other horse. Good luck and dont be discouraged just cuz shes a TB! |

DNA or Cocktail mixes they are juiced up with? My mare acts no differently than the Quarter standing at the trailer next to her, if not better. My mom doesn't juice her thoroughbreds up so she's never been on anything crazy. |

But I always heard TBs had ADD and could not focus long enough to count to three... I also remember reading something about a genetic defect that made it hard for them to turn to the right...That's why all the race tracks turn to the left. That's just mean! (i mean that in a joking way) Well you have to admit... Some of them seem to have Nitroglycerin in their DNA... DNA or Cocktail mixes they are juiced up with? My mare acts no differently than the Quarter standing at the trailer next to her, if not better. My mom doesn't juice her thoroughbreds up so she's never been on anything crazy.
Easy sister...Komet is just making jokes. It's all good.

You're lucky to have been raised around horses like that. I've only put shoes on a few and they were both event horses delegated to trail riding... Both had stifle issues. |

Location: East Texas | lol.... I guess after hanging out around barrel racing my thoughts are changing. I was at LA downs this week and saw a horse the looked like a QH, a fat QH at that. He looked like he had been hanging out in the pasture grazing with mine.... Anyway, he ran 5 furlongs and placed 2nd, and I was thinking he could prob. run some barrels. |

Location: Alberta, Canada | I have a 5 year old OTTB that is in barrel training and I'm just starting to haul. She looks QH and I get compliments on her EVERYWHERE I go (Makes me a little nervous because I know lots of people stop to watch her and she's not real solid yet lol). She can turn me out of the saddle! I was offered her almost a year before I finally took the plunge. Won't find me turning away a Thoroughbred because of papers EVER again!!! |

Nice! About how long did it take for you to get to those 3D times? I'm just curious to know to gauge where I am - weather has slowed us down a lot (as I'm sure it has most everyone). |

By no means am I "not answering your question" but one was pretty quick and the other took a little bit longer. I think it depends on the horse. I did do something different with the last one and he seemed to catch on a little quicker. I do all my slow work at home and when we went to do exhibitions, never trotted...always loping or faster so now when he goes in arena he knows what he's there for. It's worked so far :-) |

| Didnt read all the comments but the long and short of it is YES!
This was my horse from last year clocked in the 1D much faster than my former, consistent horse. I had to sell him but he is now being hauled and ran by a 9yr old in Houston and clocking 1D there! This run was early in his training. Unfortunately I didnt get video of his later, faster runs. He was special.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dcym8j_DD0
I now have two new OTTBs in for training. They are just starting to get the hang of it but I have high hopes for them as well. Personally, I prefer them. I like their personality and work ethic. The key is finding one that is sound and built correctly for the job. They do have their quirks and challenges however.
This was this mare's first time hauled. She ran about a second and a half off.

Location: NE Texas | Well, it's been about 10 months since we've started riding again from our 20 year hiatus with our OTTB... and here we are doing some slow work! I'm super proud of her! I know it gets a bit squirrely around the second and she's not in correct lead when I want her to be, but I'm picking my battles right now.
Thanks to all that have helped in our journey, especially Total P and Herbie.... appreciate all the feedback and advise!
I hope this video doo-hickey works below. Probably won't. lol
