So, I've only had geldings. I have never seen one be able to become fully erect and have total control over it. But he sure can, and does frequently, and it kinda is weirding me out. Is this normal for them to have this much control over their man business?

Sorry but I had to laugh.... BUT yes MOST of the geldings I've had will get it hard and thump it against their belly... I think is perfectly normal...

EVEN ones I've had gelded under the age of 1 have been known to do this.

I've had geldings all my life and have never seen one do this! And this horse has a new mare in the pasture, they are pretty exclusive ;), he is all hot and bothered for her and has been doing it constantly.

Is he mounting her?
If so, I would keep them seperated.

Well I  learned something today...my one gelding acts very stud-ish but he's never done that. My friend calls him Johnny Bravo now lol.

My Geldings have never mounted the mares... BUT these days I don't keep mares because I share a fence line with dumb people that keep a stud just across the fence. I can't afford to fence HIM out so I don't keep mares.

Your horse is hmm for a lack of better words, jerking off. It's a common thing for geldings to do, no worries unless he mounts mares.

We have only 1 gelding, and he has always done it.  He never acts studish at all otherwise, but while out in the pasture, he will "get busy" by himself on a regular basis.  He is 25 now, and I have not seen it in a while :)  but never worried about it.  He never mounted any mares and that's all he ever lived with, and he never fought with geldings that we hauled with.

Over the years I've seen several geldings that would cover a mare..

no he isn't, she'll tease and then when he goes for the try she'll barrel kick him. She's pretty serious about not letting him, hence the reason I'm not worried about separating them. He's got some pretty big ole welts, bites, and kick marks on him!

This is what my experience has been too! I've had nothing but geldings and haven't ever seen anyone drop like that except when eliminating and being sedated! It's very uncomfortable when you have two little kids asking what he's doing!

Use it as a teaching tool... One time I had no babysitter and my boys 4 and 6 had to ride with me to get my mare bred. I told them to stay in the barn... OF course they didn't. I didn't know this right away... I heard them arguing about something.... And what I heard was my younger son telling my older son that "the boy horse put his pee pee in the girl horses butt"  When I got done laughing We had an anatomy lesson where I explained it too them that the girl horse has 2 holes back there... Then we had to go look....

This post is funny. And totally innocent. Lol. I have geldings and some of them do this and some not. Heck my 24 yr old gelding still does and has since he was young. I've owned him 21 years. I think it's normal behavior. Just typical male behavior For any species.

LMAO I had a gelding that did that, but only with me.  He would try to intimidate my boyfriends and then my husband with studdy behavior.  It was funny.  When I sold him, he fell in love with his new girl instantly when she came to try him and was the same way with her.  She said he still hates her husband several years later.

I've had several that liked to pleasure themselves.  One would try to mount other geldings, but never a mare.

I caught my old gelding at it once (he was in his early 20's)...what got me tickled was he had his usual relaxed look on his face - which for him included a significantly drooping lower lip.  I managed to hold in my hilarity until Dad saw him...and starting singing "Rally 'Round the Flag Boys"...

We have a gelding that does this twice a day at feeding time. I suppose it's true when said you can get to a man's heart through his stomach. My gelding loves his feed.

hahaha I have a  percheron gelding we bought to use on our dude line. He's a super solid, quiet horse. Unfortunately anytime anything interesting happens in his world...this is his reaction.

He does this when you put a rider on him, he does this when the farrier is here, when he's playing the pasture, when he comes in for grain, when he comes across anything interesting on the trail (wildife, hikers, bikers etc).

He is a great horse, super easy going, great to handle, passive in the herd just has this little 'quirk'.

As you can imagine the comments we get from people are pretty hilarious. He definitely knows how to keep the conversation going
