Hey all...been quite some time since I've been on the board! Recently had a baby almost 4 weeks ago. Been out of barrel racing since August 2013 for various reasons and looking forward to getting back in the swing of things for next season!

How long did you all wait to ride after having a baby? I feel great and I'm itching to get back in the saddle! I'm seeing my OB on Wednesday and want to ask if I'm cleared to ride, but I really don't want her to look at me like at have two heads

Also...any advice on a riding schedule with new baby? TIA!

I waited 3 weeks to get back on a horse. Its a slow process getting back to riding they way you did before you had a baby. I had to increase my ride time in increments. Things def were not the same after I had my son!!

Thanks! Do you mean you just didn't have the same stamina? Or your muscles needed time to get strong again? I haven't swung a leg over a horse since June and I'm so out of shape :)

Three weeks. I had to go gradually while my muscles built back up.

So hopefully my dr won't have any major issues with it then! My husband has a 4 day weekend due to thanksgiving so I'd like to take advantage of him being home to watch the baby so I can get some rides in :)

If it was vaginal, I would have been back on by now! Haha!! C-section, no way. Not worth risking a hernia or tearing your Incision.

Congrats!!

I waited until my bleeding stopped completely, which was right about 4 weeks for me both times.  The first one, I tore badly and needed that time anyway. The second, I felt awesome after a week, but was advised to let my insides heal.

I had to wait 3 months I had stitches from tearing very painful to even walk . Take the time to heal and start doing long walks (you) your horse will love you for it my problem was my babies were big 7 -10 oz...9-15...8-6 oz. I'm just a tiny thing. If your sore take the time your doctor says. The time will go quickly.

Thanks for all your input :) I had a little bitty girl, 5 and 1/2 lbs...minimal tearing so I'm really not feeling sore anymore. I'll definitely start slow, whenever the doc say it's ok to ride, my horse has been off since June also so she's going to need me to take it slow for her sake too ;)

I am all into this thread! Glad you asked the question. I am due with my first December 21. She is going to be a small baby. Only weiging somewhere in the 4 pound range right now. I am anxious to get back in the saddle. I have stayed active so hopefully I can bounce back pretty quickly. I have heard from other moms that it takes a bit for your core muscles to return to normal, and that your balance can feel "off". Hope all goes well for you! Best of luck!

Scwebster- thank you! Congratulations to you as well!

I was BAD during pregnancy and did not exercise or stay in shape...I'm thinking it's going to take time for my core muscles and balance be what they were before :/

I stayed very active my entire pregnancy and I had my daughter via c-section. I waited 3 months and didn't have any issues. Nothing felt off.

Not to be gross or too forward...but make sure you do your Kegel excersizes.  In addition to your legs/core being weak and out of shape so are the muscles of your pelvic floor.  Maybe not so much after your first baby but definitely after that.  I would recommend a panty liner to protect the seat of your saddle from the weak muscle that you use for bladder control....at least until you are in a little better shape.

I was riding 3 weeks after baby... I rode well she was napping, or at night when husband was home.. I was lucky and my child likes to sleep. I would get up early before my husband went to work and rode..

I rode 2 weeks after. I took it slow. I had an easy delivery though and didn't tear much. As for riding I used to ride why he napped, then he stopped taking long naps around 3 months. I can't ride unless someone watches my son. Someday my horse will be in top shape again..

For those of you who rode while baby napped...stupid question but if no one else was home to watch baby, where'd you put the baby whle you rode?

I had a baby moniter, best one you could get and I have a spot right next to the house where I lope circles, So I was never out of range.. And if she wakes up i can easily get to her quickly and know what she is doing with the moniters. Or if i went to the arena and took her I had a little chair slash rocker, that she would sleep in under the shade in the aouncer stand.. But baby moiniter has been of great help to me cuz im home mostly alone..

Unfortunately all my areas to ride at our place are so far from the house I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving her there by herself even with a video monitor :( once spring is here I plan to take her pack n play to the barn and set it up in the shade and let her sleep/play while I ride. My mil doesn't work so I may ask her to come over once or twice a week and babysit while I ride. This is her first grand baby and ahes already offered a dozen times ;) then of course ride on weekends when DH is home all day. We'll see how it plays out. My dr appt is tomorrow...anxious to see what she says.

I had mine naturally, and got back on 9 days after birth. I will admit, that was too soon. I attempted to make a run 3 weeks after and really had no core. By 5 weeks post baby I made a run and felt fine, and was able to keep up to my 1D horse. So my advice is to wait a couple weeks. I know I will after baby 2 :)

Yes baby monitor is a must. My friend has one and she is able to keep an eye on the baby while at the barn ect. I was gifted one as a hostess gift at my shower. It reaches 600 feet. This will allow me to be in my barn or arena while my daughter is napping or down for the night. I cant wait to use it. Technology these days, really helps lol. When my little one gets big enough my husband is going to make a little play area for her next to the arena. Also had a friend who would park her daughter next to the arena in her stroller (in good weather of course). Sometimes you have to get creative but I think moms owe it to themselves to continue to ride if they so wish. :)

I parked my son next to the arena in his stroller. He napped and I rode. Now he's to busy for that and he doesn't much care for playing in his pack and play :/
