How do you know when you need a bigger seat size...? Or maybe I should ask how do you know when you are riding in the correct seat size?

Many years ago board member Ethel posted great info about proper seat size.  I wish she would give that information again.  It was good stuff.  It was a long time ago, but I remember it was good and made a lot of sense.

The rule of thumb I've always went by is two fingers between your thigh and the swells when you're sitting with your feet in the stirrups. Personally, I find that's usually about right! I'll ride a saddle that's a little smaller too (one finger) but if the swells touch your leg, it's probably too small. I won't run barrels in one that's any bigger...I feel like I have way too much room to flop around!

I've always gone with the 2 fingers rule but it's also how the saddles feel when you ride? Some like more room some like less.

I usually do the 2 finger rule. I like having some room for movement, but not to much! It also depends on what you are comfortable with. I have a friend who is skinnier than me and likes a 15" where I like a 14" or 14.5".

What you are comfortable and can ride effectively in. I am 5'7" with long arms. I can ride in a 14" seat, but for me to be able to set the heel of my hand against the saddle horn and lock my elbow to my hip in the turns (especially important on the mare I am riding now as she dumps on the front end and is already built downhill), I found that I NEED a 15" seat which what I normally ride in.

The seat size is more about the length of your thigh ( and in my case arms) than it is about how big your t or skinny doesn't change that length unless you are so big you can't fit in the seat.

I like this theory, but a lot depends on the saddle brand too....I like 2 fingers also and my 14" Caldwell fits me like that...I have one 13 1/2" that I rode my new horse in a few times and it feels good to me because I love that saddle so much, but it's like for when I get back into my size 5 jeans...yeah right!!...lol
