Location: Illinois | I have a chance to pick up a impeccably bred high school rodeo horse for next to nothing. He was bought at a sale by a friend of mine and 2 as told he was cold backed but the only reason he was for sale was because the kid was leaving for college. Anywho, she got this gelding home and could not make him buck for anything. Pulled him fresh off the trailer, saddled him up, and took off. Gigged him with spurs, flopped around, took him on barrels, tracked cows out of the box, swung ropes, breakaway roped, nothing. Then they caught a steer and the rope got wrapped around the geldings hind end and he came unglued. Like NFR bronc unglued. It makes me nervous because I have had a horse that was very unpredictable and would jut randomly icky on me and I hated it. I don't think this guy is like that, just think he has a thing with ropes on his butt. Long story short, my friend sold him to a girl who has basically starved him and she bought him back. So now I am thinking I want to buy him, fatten him up and either do barrels on him or sell him in the spring for a nice profit due to his breeding. Do you think it's a good idea to take in something like that? Or should I just pass this one by?

Location: Texas | It depends on how much his price is and are you willing to take the time to teach him to not be afraid of the rope touching his legs. Someone obviously skipped a step when he was being broke. I would definitely put him in a round pen with a rope and start getting him used to it around his butt and then move to his legs. I would not rope anything on that horse until you get the problem solved. That could get dangerous real quick. |

Location: Texas | Depends on the price. I wouldn't pay anymore than $1500, maybe $2000. Get a GOOD, descriptive lameness exam done on him, then I would send him to a friend of mine that ropes and starts colts and fully disclose to him the problem. If he can deem the horse as safe I would start horse on barrels and exhibition then either keep the horse or sell him. |

Location: Illinois | I'm able to get him for $600 due to the fact the friend of mine had to basically go and take him back before he was starved and that's what she paid the girl to get him back. I wont be able to ride him for a while so I plan to do a lot of ground work and basically start him from scratch and not skip the rope around the legs and butt step. I don't rope so it's not a huge deal to me that he doesn't like to drag steers. I would use him for barrels. |

Location: Indiana | I have a Nonstop Firewater and Jets Payday mare and I LOVE LOVE LOVE her. She will not overrun a barrel and the only times we hit barrels is because of rider error. I would definately try this horse, I think he would be worth all the time you need to put into him. |

| I have a 2 yo filly bred exactly this way. Had her broke this summer. She never bucked with him, bucked after being saddled and lunged, but never with him. She had some ground issues, manners, but he got that worked out and she leads, stands tied, saddles like any old horse. She rides good now, just a little green, not sure what I want from her, but a very good girl. He said he had broke several Jets Payday horses and they are all like that. A little different in the beginning, but don't give up, they turn out to be very good barrel horses. I have a lot of hope for her. |

My only problem is he is 11.. just hoping that's not to old to work out whatever is bothering him. I wish I knew more of his back story. All I know is the kid originally sold him because he was going to college and could only take one horse, this guy was his second in line.
Thanks for all the feedback. I think I am going to give him a chance! |

| OMG! Your horse is a full brother to my 2yo mare. See the pedigree for Nonstop Paychex. She is a red dun with a beautiful head and hips. She is right now about 15 or 15.1 and built like a train. I think that comes from Jets Payday. My horse breaker is a well known starter for barrel horses, Charmayne, Mark Bugni, Kim Thomas, went to Brazil last summer to do clinics and he liked her. He said like most of them, they are a little harder in the beginning, but worth it. I just put my mare pedigree out there, so I hope it comes up for you, if not it will later. Good luck. |

Wow! That is so awesome! Did you get her from her breeder? I know he came from Indiana where Nonstop Firewater is standing. She is a cute little thing, found a pic of her on BHW sale ads. He is about 15.1 and built more racey. I will attach a pic. He is a classic dun and has a pretty little head on him. I found her pedigree on allbreed
ETA: This is before he got sold to the girl who didn't feed him, he is about 300lbs lighter now :(

Good luck - he's a real beauty. |

I love his breeding and the way he looks when he was healthy. Bless your heart and your friends for helping this poor guy. I feel sure I don't need to remind you but make sure right here at first don't feed him too much and I would not even consider worming him for a while. I wish you best of luck with him and please keep us posted. |

UC Davis has a good publication on this. Refeeding syndrome can really cause problems. So be careful in how you bring him back to shape. http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ceh/docs/horsereport/pubs-July2012-bkm-sec.pdf |

I know it's going to be a long hard road but I just have to give him a chance. I know if I wouldn't have gotten him he would not have made it. He had access to grass hay 24/7 and I have been giving him a small amount of senior feed so I can get electrolytes in him. I'm going to keep a journal of his progress to keep everyone updated. I just hope he isn't to bad that the cold winter gets him. I do have him double blanketed though so I am sure that helps. |

That really breaks my heart and those people should be in jail. Please do everything you can to find them and charge them. It will be a long road back, but he will recover and who knows the blessing you will get for having saved his life. Prayers to you. |

He keeps thrashing like he wants to get up he just can't find the strength to get up. He is in a nice big stall so he can't hurt himself but I am sure lying on his bony hips is got to hurt. The vet should hopefully be here shortly. |

Location: Illinois | Sadly poor slim jim did not make it through the night. We had a rescue team come out and try to get him up but he wouldnt try to stand on his own. they had him up for 12 minutes and he didn't even try so they laid him back down in our barn and covered in with blanket set him up sternaly so he wasn't on his side. I SAT with him most of the night. I left him at 1030 last night so I could get some sleep. When I left him he was breathing hard and wouldn't eat or drink so I didn't think he had long. When I went down to check on him this morning he was gone. even though I only had him for a few short days I am very heartbroken over the fact that he didn't make it. I'm going to have been buried in one of our pastures tomorrow morning.

Location: Illinois | Thank you everyone for all the kind words and prayers. I plan to find whoever did this and make sure that she pays for what she did to this sweet animal. Even in the last stages of life he never stopped being a sweet loving horse. As I sat with him last night he put his head in my lap as I cried and tears fell on his face. He even nickered to me when I walked into the barn for the last time to see him. I was so sure that he would have the strength to pull through but he was just to weak to fight off the infection and the emaciation at the same time. I wish I could have been there with him when he passed but it was almost like he was holding on until I left him to go so I didn't have to see it happen. I know I had only had him for three days but the last 72 hours I have continually stayed by his side and never left, hand fed and watered him and kept him warm. I actually fell asleep next to him yesterday with my hand on his face. The only way to keep him from thrashing around was for me to be right by his head. I never thought I could grow to love him so fast but it happened. I hope he felt that love and died knowing he was loved.

We raised him and own Nonstop Firewater. I'm so sorry you are going through all this. He was a great horse when he was younger! I don't remember him being cold backed! But I lost track of who owned him years ago. Praying he will be ok!
I am so glad you commented. I was hoping to find out some more information about him as I planned to fatten him up and get him back on barrels. I really am not sure if he was actually cold backed or just in pain and needed work. I wish I would have had the chance to see what kind of horse he really was. I'm sure he was a great boy, he was so loving even in sickness. |

I hope you find the person who did this. What a total POS. I would leave no stone unturned in ruining her life. Sending prayers your way. |

Thank you everyone for all the kind words and prayers. I know I had only had him for two days but the last 72 hours I have continually stayed by his side and never left, hand fed and watered him and kept him warm. I actually fell asleep next to him yesterday with my hand on his face. The only way to keep him from thrashing around was for me to be right by his head. I never thought I could grow to love him so fast but it happened. I hope he felt that love and died knowing he was loved.
Bless your heart. I have tears streaming down my face as I read that. Thank you again for being there for him. |

Location: California | I will never understand how people can do this to an animal. Yes, there is a special place in hell for those people and I for one would love to speed the process up. God bless you for trying to help this horse. If there is anything I can do to help find who did this, please PM me. |

Same here. I lost my most favorite mare this past June and can't get her out of my mind, so it boggles me that people could do such things. I will never, ever understand how one living being could do this to another, especially one that can't do for itself. |

Location: Illinois | We got Slim buried yesterday. He has a spot out behind the barn where he will always be with the other horses. I plan to make a cross for his grave tonight. It was very hard watching him be buried but I know he is finally in his resting place. |
