About two months ago I posted about my mare I sent to TX for training that had a "panic attack" profuse sweating, unstable on her legs, lashing out, called vet sedated her and she was fine. Also drew blood at the same time and everything came back normal.
This mare has had nothing but issues since getting to the trainer (no fault of trainer) we are all stumped. She has intermitent lamness. She can come out of her pen stiff and off be on the walker and come out of it, be rode and come out of it and sometimes not come out of it all day. I watched her go this morning and she was VERY off on her right front, stabbing it into the ground short striding. Appeared very muscle sore and almost has the appearence of tying up, let her stand for a few mins and its as if every muscle in her body hurts when she moves again. Just this morning I watched her go from off in the front to off in the rear to back to off in the front in a matter of 10 mins, like an alternating soundness issue. It has all of us stumped, never seen anything like it, not sure where to start to look for a problem since its so intermitent and not always in the same area. Any suggestions would be great.. Love this mare but can't see dumping more money into her then I already have if she can't stay sound (she is coming 5 and has never had any  soundness issues till this point)

Suspect PSSM as a distinct possibility. What kind of feed program is she on? Turn out?

Shouldn't that have come up in her blood test? She is on alfalfa cubes and a small catch pen, not stalled. Very little to no grain

Pssm would have only come up if they would have done a ck test, and the ck test has to be done a few times to see if it is going up or down. This is not a regular test. The ck test generally only says the horse is tying up or has tied up in the past. The next step would be to do a muscle biopsy to conform or deny the Pssm theory

EPM I don't know much about this, but i did read somewhere exacerbated by stress, the hauling could have done that

If the horse was mine, I would go pick her up and take her to my vet get her diagnosed and go from there

A muscle biopsy is needed to definitively diagnose PSSM. A very low starch diet, with either ALCAR or high amounts of added fat. From what I have read, some do not tolerate the alfalfa well even though it is in the diet recommendations of Dr Beth Valentine, a leading researcher in this disease. Any form of grain or sugars can trigger the really sensitive cases, including sugars found in grass, especially at certain times of growth.

To start with, you can look up the feed and maintenance recommendations by googling...PSSM, Dr Beth Valentine, etc. Switch over to said recommendations and see if the symptoms abate. If you REALLY need a definitive answer, then spring for the muscle biopsy and accompanying down time.

PSSM. AND IF SO YOU ARE LUCKY SHE IS STILL ALI VE IF YOU ARE MOVING HER DURING OR DIRECTLY AFTER AN EPISODE.IS SHE PEEING DARK URINE? I WOULDNT DO ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL YOU FIND OUT.EVEN with Dr .Valentine who is very good, our mare had very bad episodes even with proper feed program and exercise. ITS UGLY TO WATCH SO PLEASE HAVE HER CHECKED ASAP. GOOD LUCK Turn out is very important for these horses.

But would pssm have a sudden onset like this? This mare has been in training before with no issues and fed heavy amounts of feed (grain and alfalfa) and never had a problem till now. I thought they did ck her blood to see if she tied up, but I will double check with the vet to be sure.

Had my mare for 5 years before she tried to tie up. And her SGOT and CK levels did not indicate tying up....

Lot's of vets are not familiar with PSSM.

yes it can suddenly appear.. it sounds exactly like tying up to me. she walked out of it BUT you shouild not move them at all or can suffer muscle damage ..sounds like it started when she went to trainers .. (no fault of theres But they should know better then  to move her or continue training if they did )  my guess is she has some damage

You only need a muscle biopsy to confirm type 2 PSSM you can do a hair pull for type 1. $40 at animal genetics and can have results back in a week. That would be the place for me to start as well.
