Since it hasn't aired just yet on TV, I won't say who won, but it was someone who has never won a round at the NFR before! According to Steve & Jolee on Prorodeolive.com the ground seemed to be a little deeper and trickier than in years past and gave some people a bit of trouble. Can't wait to watch!

I just looked at the results on prorodeo.com  and thought the ground must have played a factor in the difference in the times tonight from recent years. I'm impatient.  I always look at the results before it actually airs. LOL
The PRCA website is updated as it actually happens in real time.

Yeah, the ground didn't look great tonight, but that was a good run by Fallon and Baby Flo. Sure seemed like a lot of downed barrels though. I'm ready for round 2!!!

I think it is totally ridiculous, that at the biggest event of the year, in a "professional" sport, the ground has to be that bad... And THAT is why I'm on strike when it comes to rodeos!

Annnndddd, we don't need to see "coverage" of a tipped barrel... Not sure if it's just me, but did anyone else notice the camera target in on the tipped barrel each time?  Overall coverage is way better than I thought it would be.

I was wondering the same thing....

I'm sure we are all aware of what a downed barrel looks like!

And the ground...... Oh my they all tried. I give them props

Louie had a stumble on the first that had me cringing a bit.

I'm usually not a ground nazi, but it was bad last night. I hope they work on it. I know rodeo is rodeo and that's what separates the rodeo horses from the jackpot horses, but dang.... do they make the guys at the Superbowl play in a field with 4 foot high grass? NO!

I do wish they have better commentary, and I hate they are giving us close ups of down barrels. With all my complaining, I am still glad I am able to watch it on TV.

It is a good thing those horses have seen junk ground before or several would have gone down. After the first few I was holding my breath for each horse & rider hoping they made it around safely. Fingers crossed that the ground improves for the rest of the NFR. It is no fun to run on bad ground but that is definitely what separates the cream of the crop rodeo horses from the rest.

The ground reminded me of so many years back when Sue Miller fell at the first barrel.  Don't remember what year.
You will not hear me complain about the television coverage.  We got to see all 15 run which is way more than I thought would happen.  I am just thankful we get to see everyone in every event.

Fallon rode very very well. Her and that little horse were on fire.

Movin also looked awesome, minus a little error on the first, but the rest of her run was fasttttt

Cervi and Stingray were solid as usual.  They looked great.

What is the story on Carlee's horse? I remember seeing somewhere she sold Arson. Does she own this mare? She could win on a donkey, but this mare is also exceptionally nice.

she has two 6yr old mares, both A Streak of Fling bred. I think both have only been to a couple rodeos, so it was very impressive to see that mare work as well as she did! I believe she rode Lolo but don't quote me on that. I'm excited to see how she will be running come the 5ht or 6th round. Great job!

That camera crew probably has producers in their ear going 'first barrel, now second, third!' I've been in a production truck, not during a rodeo but they're watching more than one screen. I'm just glad they are showing all 15. That always is a worry. I've also been in a radio truck.

I was disappointed in the ground too. It looked too dry. I know all the sayings about "rodeo ground". But when it's that big of deal with that much money on the line and that caliber of horses, there is no excuse for crappy ground.

But......  IMO, there is never an excuse for bad ground. Ever. Anywhere.

Yes! ^^ It's a shame that when you travel all year with the goal of running at this event you have to worry about the ground. This shouldn't be the case when you work so hard to get there all year around

I ran on some of the worst stuff ever at a rodeo a month ago. Horses had trouble, like you saw last night. Then one horse went down. They stopped slack and watered it. I guess you can't stop a show though. If that was a NASCAR race track, live or not, they would stop and fix it!

Any one remember the year Charmayne James offered to pay to bring in fresh dirt for the T&M?  The ground was so bad.  They turned her down.  That ground is older than ....dirt? I think it was fresh dirt 30 years ago.

ridejg - 2014-12-04 11:25 PM Ugh the ground!! Poor horses trying to get a hold of it...

Seemed very slick and caused a lot of the tipped barrels.

I know it was only the first night but I'm impressed with the TV coverage.  I hope it continues for the next 9 nights.

i thought coverage was better last year......it was fine but some of the camera work was just annoying......who the heck wants to watch the split screen blob and miss the head shot on several runs when they finally cut back just in time to catch the heel shot.....not impressed

Agreed! I think it will continue to get better. I would assume there is a slight learning curve on the camera operator stuff ... I'm not a fan of watching barrels fall down and almost missing the rest of the run.

I think the razer shoes on BabyFlo made a huge difference in how she handled that ground!  Great choice for the T&M!  :

I'm still not sure about my opinion of the razer shoes but I sure do agree with you about this.

A barrel racer pays their own way they buy their fuel, their trucks, buy the horse, pay the vet ,the shoer and for this?

NFR ground committee better get it together fast.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who didn't enjoy watching the downed barrel. The camera needs to follow the barrel racer and horse not the downed barrel. Come on! Hopefully the ground and the camera angles will be better tonight.

Lobo - 2014-12-05 10:25 AM Any one remember the year Charmayne James offered to pay to bring in fresh dirt for the T&M?  The ground was so bad.  They turned her down.  That ground is older than ....dirt? I think it was fresh dirt 30 years ago.

Whaaat? I didn't know about that! Why on earth would they turn her down. So dumb. Im hoping they get it fixed so everyone has a fair, safe shot tonight!

Did anyone else notice how hard the ground in the roping boxes was? The horses didn't dig it up at all. And there was some funky lines in it that were never messed up...

The only time I noticed the lines in the boxes was when the view was from above and it was in between events .... made me wonder if they raked the boxes between events.

When we were there in 2008, we sat right above the boxes ... they were never worked but didn't look bad at all either.

I've been watching for years, and I was shocked that no one fell and got hurt last night. The horses knew it was risky dirt. They were running on tippy toes and not extending.
Must say I'm glad to be a spoiled 5D girl after watching last night.
Good luck tonight ladies!

I thought the lines were shadows?

I think Butch and Jeff do a good job!!
They only have what 14 seconds per person to talk about them.  My goodness how much could you really say in that amount of time without sounding like you were just reading your lines out of a book.   I guess those who always complain about them should mute the TV and see how well you do in that amount of time.  I thought the entire NFR went really fast last night...faster than what I remember.   I am sure the camera angles will improve.     I too am thankful for the showing of all 15 runners and the interview of the winner!

SoDak - 2014-12-05 9:10 AM I was impressed with Carlee's horse with it being so young and not been to many rodeos it really handled the atmosphere and the crappy ground well!!

I totally agree...I think most don't realize she's not riding the horse that got her there.

LRQHS - 2014-12-05 10:32 AM Thanks Youtube posters. That's the best I've seen Baby Flo run (just that I've seen). That little horse rocked it! I'm digging Carlee Pierce's horse too. Stingray is sooooo consistent. Wow. I'm ready for round 2.

That Tammy Key saddle she was riding in sure worked for her.

I was glad it showed all 15. I like Butch and Jeff. Yes they sound like a broken record, but oh well. There just isn't much time to talk like the other events when we wait on everything to fall into place. I watch WPRA Today often and the commentary isn't any better and it is a barrel racer discussing taped footage. In 13-14 seconds what would we want them to really say? I was so glad there wasn't a game on before it started so it could start on time. I haven't looked at their schedule. I sure hope there are no games before the NFR for the next 9 performances.

Hope they fix the ground tonight.  As far as the tv coverage, I'm just beyond happy that they show all 15 girls every night.  I can remember years ago when you were lucky if they showed 5 of them!

The lines in the box are shadows from the panels.
