Location: Texas | I have done a lot of research on it since we also have a mare who for the same reasons are considering selling embryos. It can be a big hassle or a breeze. Just depends.
If you are still running the horse while they are flushing it can complicate things because you have to work around the competition schedule and potentially miss races and take time off to get it done.
If you are not running the horse but you also want your baby out of the mare, you have to decide if you are going to ET yours too, or let her carry. If you can afford to ET your baby too, then it shouldn't be a huge issue since your mare will be available all season for everyone to try and get their embryos. If you are wanting to let your mare carry your foal, as in our case because we can't afford to ET, you have to worry about getting the paid for embryos done first, and then what happens if they lose an embryo at like 60 days after the recip goes home, and now your mare is in foal past the point of flushing? You will also have to accommodate your clients and get their embryos done and yours should come afterward.. what if they have complications with poor semen from their stallion of choice that now delays you getting your baby? What if the entire season is taken up trying to get other people accounted for and you end up with either a late late baby or no baby?
Then you have to figure out your contract. When will you want payment? Would you want deposit, then PIF before the process? Or deposit, then half before first flush and half after 45 day confirmation?
It's a hassle, and I don't know if we will do it because we can't afford to ET our mare so our baby will obviously be the last one on the list to happen and then if the client embryo slips how would they replace it mid season?
As far as price of embryos goes, its all over the board. the big name, big record mares sell embryos in the 5 figures. Our mare would not go for that much but I priced her accordingly and have two spoken for if I choose to go through with it. I just don't know if I want to deal with the headache. |
