| Does anyone mind sharing what they do for entertainment besides riding? I only ever rode for fun, weekend jackpots sometimes, trail rides, and I was working in starting my mare on barrels, just that kind of thing. But I've been told that after too many concussions I am not allowed to ride for over a year and a half, both by my doctor and my family. I'm not looking for sympathy I just know that without my horses I'm going to go crazy! Anyone mind sharing what they do? And wear your helmets! If I could go back I would have put it on!!

| ok - I am very active and love the outdoors soooo here's a list! Hope you get the ok to go back to the horses real soon!
ALL shooting sports - hunting, skeet, etc. I grew up with it and love it! sew fun things - horse blanket coolers, house stuff, dog stuff, etc RUN - Almost every day :) baking - thus I must run because I always eat what I make! Reading - anything and everything I can get my hands on Dog training - we have a couple BC's that herd and I enjoy working them, tuning them, training, perfecting .... takes alot of time but I love the rewards! Music - I love digging for and finding new Red Dirt Country type bands! Volunteer - the SO and I are active with a couple of 4-H clubs helping young'ens learn the ropes showing sheep and cattle Livestock - We own, show, fit, judge, etc and love it. We both grew up showing sheep and cattle and it is most certainly a way of life too.
Good Luck! I'm sure you'll find some things to help pass the time! |

| First let me say I hope you heal up fast! I also trap shoot and bird hunt (upland birds - we have German Wirehaired pointers), fish, scrapbook to name a few - and this could explain why I am so behind on getting my gelding going! Of all of those things though - besides barrel racing, nothing excites me more than hunting behind our dogs, they are freaking cool to watch! |

Location: Texas | I do agility with my dogs it is soooo much fun!! Also we are really into the whole being self sufficient thing so garden pigs goats etc. keep us busy. What about getting a mini and training it cart. It's really easy and those things are fun!!! We have done it for clients ( older bad backs injury etc) that can't ride. And we have a blast with them even my 6ft plus team roping husband. |

| I love to read. I am finding out that I still want to learn new things. If I couldn't ride for that long I would seriously look into agility training dogs. I think that looks like a lot of fun. Maybe travel some. |

| When I wasn't riding or working I used to do a lot when we lived in Colorado.... , Hunting - elk, bear, and coyote, mountain lions(most of the time we just took pictures and worked the dogs and went on our way), snow boarding and snow shoeing all winter, summer time - hiking & camping, the lake was the place if we had free time. Now... here in Oklahoma I just ride, go for runs, started a barrel series, started working out at a gym, go camping everyone once in while, when its not too hot and sticky, go to the lake sometimes but we sold our boat and the water tends to have a special aroma when it gets hot and dry. If your a crafty person, I know a lot really like scrapbooking... |

Let me tell you what LRQHS does for fun. She drinks beer on her couch and calls people randomly pretending she's a drunk Cajun looking to buy donkey's. No wait, she hasn't done that yet. She's going to do that tonight!! Wooohoooo! Good times! |

Maybe re-decorate/paint rooms in your house? That's one I need to do but never seem to get the time!

| I love to read! Loom beading is a great quiet time activity as well and can be spun off into some side income. I love to cook and bake as well. Not sure what level of activity you are allowed to be at, but yoga and/or dance classes are a couple things I really wish I had more time for. Sewing as well - I would love to improve my skills there. When my grandmother was confined to her chair in the living room due to illness, she did a LOT of embroidery. It all depends what you are interested in!
If you are allowed to do groundwork with your horses during your time off, it would be a great opportunity to really improve both your skills and your horses'! |

ETA maybe you could get involved with in-hand classes? Anywhere around that offers showmanship or in-hand trail?

Oh man...see you crack me up!!
Geocaching is like a fun hike in the woods with a prize at the end. a scavenger hunt for an item cached in a specific spot you find using a compass and coordinates. It's fun...might be more fun with beer. I'll have to try that.
For the coyote...did you salt the hide or just skin and freeze? I can email you the instructions/method I like to use if you want. A salted hide is stable much longer when frozen....and you need to salt it anyway before the tanning process. I highly recommend using a kit for the tanning chemicals. The Tannery inc. makes the one I have found to give me the best results with the least amount of fuss.

| Wow thanks for all the ideas! I would love to try agility, I've always wanted to this might be the best excuse to try it out! I could sit here and laugh at some of the comments all day, it's pretty fun and entertaining!! I probably should have said that I'm selling my horses. Maybe one day I'll be able to own one again but they are too expensive if I'm not able to ride them, and honeslty they look so bored just sitting out in the pasture!! I am going to have to look into these ideas! thank you all so much!!! |

Location: Southeast, Texas | Prayers for a speedy recovery!! If we were smart we would all wear helmets, but I'll be the first to admit that I do not! I'm sorry that you've had to go through a traumatic injury, but very glad that you are here to tell us about it!!
When I'm not riding, or working around the barn my hobbies include:
Archery- I did not think that I would enjoy it. My husband is a avid hunter, and his passion is bow hunting. He bought me a bow in hopes that it would be something that we could do together. It has turned in to one of my most favorite non-horsey activities. I have been hunting with him several time, but I have not actually killed anything. (Other than the target in the back yard!)
Reading- I am a bookworm. I could read all day if I my family would allow it. I know it's not everyone's "cup of tea" but I can get lost in a good book!! I'm not just a fan of novels though. I could spend hours reading up on horse topics as well. I've read so many equine nutrition and breeding studies that I could probably be a encyclopedia... well, if my memory wasn't "three kids" fuzzy.
Arts and Crafts- I love making door hangers, and signs. I do a lot of wooden holiday hangers, wreaths, and indoor/outdoor art with pallets and such. I find it to be very fun!!
Candle making- I started making candles because I buy SO MANY!!! It has actually saved me money, and I have found scents that I could never buy in stores! Win, win in my book!! It's easy and fun!
If I was sidelined, and could not ride I think I would take that time to do a fun online course! That would be about the only way I would have time since I spend 3-4 hours in the saddle every day!! I could probably get a lot done if I cut back. =]
