| I just ran blood work on a mare of mine (yay for working at a vet) and she is anemic. Not terribly, but I had wondered why she is sleeping so much and seems to be worn out all the time. I am wondering what were your horses symptoms and what did you do to solve the problem?

| I fed mine red cell! Her symptoms are a terribly long story and i will spare you the details - long story short her anemia was a side affect of something else. But red cell helped her! |

| is there a short story of what the cause was? I am going to do a fecal check to check parasites and put her on Ulcer Guard and a blood builder and recheck in 2 weeks. I can get Red Cell or Lixotinic. I know Red Cell is much higher in all of the minerals that are listed than Lixotinic but as a vet, we carry both and the vets have always prescribed Lixotinic rather than red cell so I'm not sure which I should choose. |

I would reevaluate your feeding program as well as supplements.
I do not keep mine on ulcer meds 24/7 or keep on preventative ulcer stuff as it causes physical effects on the body decreasing acid production increasing mucosal lining which then in turn causes food to not be broken down or readily absorbed because of not enough acid or too thick of mucosal lining. |

I'm sleepy. Please explain what you mean. She is on an ulcer preventative (herbs) but not "ulcer meds." Are you saying this might be a cause of my problem? |

| Depending on what herbs yes it can if she has been on them for a prolonged period of time.
Every herb or drug anyone takes will have a side effect if taken for a long period of time.
The amount of time will also depend on the herb/medication
For example long term bute inhibits the prostaglandin synthesis or production which in turn also suppresses immune system and sour presses bone marrow productin which leads to anemia
Sadly most people who produce/sell herbs will deny of any negative effects as there have been no long term studies and/or they actually don't know how the body works on a cellular level.
Sadly most vets won't take the time to investigate drug/herb use at the cellular level too and this is where you need to look.
With preventing ulcers most products do one of two things
Inhibit secretion of acid therefore food particles are not broken down properly for the intestine to absorb the nutrients
Promoting thickening of mucosal lining this doesn't only happen in the stomach but also in the intestine prohibiting the nutrients to absorb through the wall as the mucus is just too thick |

Also, Lixotinic is still sold in dark glass bottles for the express purpose of keeping the integrity of the product in tact. Red Cell is sold in plastic which isn't good from what my vet says. According to my vet there really isn't a comparison between Lixotinic and Red Cell which is evidenced in it's pricing and it's packaging.
You work for a vet? What does your boss say? I'd go with their recommendation and am kind of surprised that you would come to this board for an opinion on the matter. |

Working at an equine vet is not as it's cracked up to be. I obviously won't say where I work but to them I'm just another annoying barrel racer that constantly has horse problems. I had rather ask another vet at a different practice or figure it out myself. It's not worth being treated like an annoyance sometimes.
Sorry that was a little much on the personal side but that's my reason for coming here.

I had 2 horses become anemic, I did fecal and did blood work
1 horse had worms - did a powerpac and then lixotinic and re-checked and she was fine
1 horse was a bleeder - got him on lasix/kentucky red - lixotinic - he was fine once bleeding was controlled |

If you don't mind me asking, how long did you wait to re-check and did you discontinue the lixotinic after the re-check? |

Location: Adopt a homeless pet - www.petfinder.com! | It didn't involve my horses, but I was pretty signifigantly anemic this year and had to take an iron supplement. Was told it takes 120 (150, can't quite remember) days for the blood to rebuild. Have no idea if it's the same with horses. It helped me a alot and I feel so much better now that my iron levels are good. |
