I have a mare that was kicked in her splint bone and instead of a clean break like they normally do she has a chip. Happened 2 weeks ago had it X-rayed Thursday. Vet said re X-ray in 30 days and see if the body did anything, to prevent surgery. If surgery does have to happen. Will she be out for a long time ? 1 vet said a short amount and the other said 3-6 months.
What's a normal cost of surgery like this.? This isn't a barrel career ending surgery is it ? I've heard it's rather simple and just time.
She's on stall rest and it does keep swelling with butecort sweat on it. Have rotated to furizon and DMSO.
Any other suggests to help and or prevent surgery possibly.

What type of surgery. Removal or plate?
Personally had many experiences with splint fractures had anywhere from shattered to clean breaks never had surgery.
I have had bone marrow injected into the break and have been back riding in 6 weeks.
I have had generic stem cells injected into the break and been back on in 6 weeks.
Both have been used with shattered and the bone completely healed in less then 6 weeks. All horses were on stall rest for the 6 weeks.
All surgeries have risk factors and if they are removing the splint the chances of arthritis in the knee increases depending on the technique used. Also with one technique there is a chance the remaining splint will aggravate and another surgery is needed.

The splint bone is broke with a chip kinda just hanging out. Vet said the body may do what it needs to so that's why we are waiting 1 month for another X-ray.
We would only be removing the chip not the whole splint bone.

I have a horse that had a splint bone broken almost in half. He had surgery with a plate. He recovered from the surgery just fine, but the plate is now causing him some issues, so he is going back to the vet to probably have it removed. Of course, my horse is the one in 1,000 that the plate bothers.
The vet explained to me that the "outside" splint bone does bear some weight and supports the outside structures of the knee.

A friend of mine's 6 year old just had both splint bones removed due to a fracture that was causing her a lot of discomfort. They said it was a better idea to remove both due to their size. Surgery was done in October and I know she can start riding her again in a week or two. She did have the incision reopen which delayed it a bit.

I had a mare fracture one on the hind that healed in its own. Then the same mare broke one on her other hind leg. Hers became infected and a portion had to be removed. She was on stall rest for awhile, but when she was ready to go again I was pregnant so just turned her out to pasture. After my son was born I legged her back up. The bone removal did not seem to bother her...it was all the other stuff that accident prone mare did to herself that got her retired!
