I have a question regarding stifles. I have looked at a horse in the past, but he showed changes on xrays in his stifles. Relatively young horse, 5 years old. The vet who performed the prepurchase said he will definitely have to have maintenance done. Would this be a deal breaker for a purchase? Never dealt with stifles, but have heard they are harder to maintain. Just wanting people's opinions who have been down this road. Does he sound like a money pit or can this be maintained pretty well?

Did the vet say what was wrong with the stifle? Arthritis? Degenerative joint disease? ligament injury? disease?

It was on both stifles, but he seemed to think it had been injured at some point in the past.

If it's from injury I'm not 100% sure on how to deal with it, I was told it was slightly different from arthritis. I have one that has osteoarthritis and has them. Injections, supplements(msm, glucosamine, boswellia, etc), proper conditioning(up and down hills-not to much, not a lot of circles, poles) and you can also try shock wave therapy on it-I haven't but was told it has helped others.

Problems in a horse that young would have me going in the other direction. But I don't have thousands to spend just maintaining a horse.

Thanks for the responses! The price tag isn't too bad, but if he's going to be unsound more than sound I don't want that.
