I'm not asking if a person should or should not lol (I know the majority answer there). I'm asking for those that either have bred a navicular horse (mare or stud) or have/ have had a baby out of a navicular horse- Did your foals/offspring end up navicular? I have heard the controversy and read the research on if it is passed on but I want real life experience on if it was or was not passed on.
thanks everyone!
(I was offered a "nice" 2yo that is out of a navicular mare that shows no signs via external appearance or x-rays) YET lol

I had a mare that I was going to breed, who had a severe case of navicular in her front feet. I never thought she had it because she carried herself well, and didn't act lame...it wasn't until the farrier came to trim her that I was told she had it. My farrier said that with her case that she wouldn't be able to support the weight of a baby, so I should avoid breeding her. I ended up having to put her down because as the weeks went by, I started to see how badly she was in pain.

The oldest foal I have out of my navicular mare is coming 3 but she looks OK so far. My mare has navicular because of a bad farrier though so that makes a difference IMO.

It's my belief that a whole lot of navicular is caused by a whole lot of bad shoeing/trimming. That is not to totally discount the role conformation plays in the equation.

i dont think its hereditary.....i think its poor conformation and bad or non existant trimming at an early age............when its caught at an early stage its very treatable

thanks everyone!
the dam of this filly has pretty small feet (with naturally tall heels) but the filly and her sire (OTMR stud) does not- they both have relatively large feet for their size.
