Location: Midwest | Every Christmas eve, my parents would read me "The Night Before Christmas" as a bedtime story. We would set out milk and cookies for Santa, and put Jesus in the Manger.
In the morning, we would wake up, open gifts and have cinnamon rolls next to the fireplace before going to church. :) |

Location: Oregon | My best Christmas memory is a toss up between:
When we used to board our horses at a public barn. We'd always "wrap" all the stalls like Christmas presents, and hung stockings for all the horses. And by Christmas morning, many of the horses in the barn had given other horses little gifts in their stockings. We also would always have a small Christmas party and human gift exchange. Such fun times!
And the best gift I was ever given for Christmas. Our first horse had passed away earlier that year, and we'd cut off his tail, like most do when their horse passes away. Mom ended up making both my sister and me each 2 shoo-fly's out of his tail. Each of them had his tail as the main part, and then as the part that kinda holds it around the metal loop, she wove each of our current horses' tails with our first horse's tail. One of my shoo-flys is hanging from the rear view mirror of my truck so that every barrel race I go to he's with me, and the other one is hanging in my room until I find something else to do with it.

Location: Riding Crackhead. | My favorite Christmas memory is my dad hooking up one of his teams of Belgians and going on a sleigh ride. My brother and I would tie a scoop shovel to the sled and take turns going for a ride. Dad was a wild man and would get the team at a full gallop hitting all the bumps he could and taking as sharp of turns as possible to give us the wildest ride he could. Such simple things, but sure makes for great memories and makes me miss my dad. |

Location: Kansas | I do remember, when I was a young girl....my grandpa always took my sister and I to church on christmas eve evening. We loved the time we got to spend with him! And after church, we always went out for dinner. I sure do miss the time I had with my grandpa, and I've started that same tradition with my daughter |

| My most favorite Christmas tradition is our whole family gets together on Christmas Eve and we let the kids open gifts while listening to a Christmas album (yep mom and dad still have a record player). We eat pizza and have a blast catching up on things we have missed throughout the year. Then on Christmas day we spend the mornings with our families then everyone heads to dad and mom's house for a Christmas feast (makes Thanksgiving look like an ordinary day). :) We get fat, drink a few hot Totti's, and play games. I love the traditions my family has and I am extremely lucky amid thankful for each and every one I get to spend with them. Life is short enjoy every minute and everybody. |

| OH, awesome!!!
One of my most favorite memories has to be when we sit down to eat as a family on Christmas day. The food is always terrific - my mom pulls out all the stops! After all us kids got big and old and in college, she started the drink tradition. She pulls out a bartending bible, randomly flips it open and points to a recipe without looking. And that drink gets made in mass quantity to be consumed all day! Christmas is always joyous and fun in our family! |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | My favorite tradition even to this day (I am almost 30) is all us girls ( I have 3 sisters) would all sleep in my moms room on Christmas Eve. We would all be so wound tight that we couldn't sleep. Poor Santa (mom) had to sleep on the couch. None of us could leave the room unless we were all ready to go out. If we had to use the restroom mom would lead us out and make sure our eyes were closed. |

Location: Memphis, TN | When my husband and I got married I quickly became the "horrible" woman at Christmas Eve. We did our first Christmas trying to entertain EVERY side of the family and it was insane. The next Christmas we also had a 6 month old daughter and I felt the need to make our own Christmas tradition. I put my foot down and told my family AND my husbands family that Christmas Eve was OUR time. Boy did that ruffle feathers but my MIL actually stood up for us and everyone eventually came to grips with it. Now we have our special night preparing for "Santa" and not driving all over town. We go to our church service, come home and eat dinner, get in our pjs, start Christmas movies, bake cookies, and make reindeer food that we throw out in the yard. We do typically have one person each year who tries to schedule a family deal on Christmas Eve and I have to be the bad guy again but overall it became something that everyone needed and they have actually thanked me for doing it. Each Christmas Eve is such a magical time watching my kids and their excitement. As I posted on the facebook thread, it's not about me anymore and my kids Christmas memories are so much better than any I can think of on my own! |

That's my family's special tradition. It's even more special because my kids thought up the idea. |

I'll never forget the happiness & tears when he opened that piece. It was the first time she'd managed to totally surprise him.....this year I'm almost dreading Christmas. My uncle passed away unexpectedly a month ago. I'm now working on a drawing of him for my family. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Mines a toss up...either the year I didnt' get anything for Christmas, I was 14 and devastated at the time, got a ring from my older sister, black hills gold shaped in a horseshoe and my stocking with socks and underwear and oranges that Santa left every year. I was really hurt but in our family you do not complain or whine, the rule is if you are doing things right people will notice without you having to mention it so I figured I had done something and just wasn't aware of it yet. Two months later was my 15th birthday, had a HS rodeo and as a friend and I were warming our horses up she asked me how I liked my Christmas gift...told her I didn't get one. She took off to get her other horse, and a few minutes later I saw my mom waving me over from the stands. Walked over on Ginger and mom asked me if I wanted to know what my birthday present was, I just shrugged my shoulders, wasn't expecting much seeing as Christmas had been a bust. Mom put her hand on Ginger's neck and said Happy Birthday...took me a few minutes to realize what she meant. The kid I leased Ginger from had decided to sell her, mom had bought her for me but couldn't come up with the money all at once and had made payments on her, didnt' get her paid off in time for Christmas so she became my Christmas/Birthday present. It suddenly became the Best Christmas EVER!!!! LOL!!! Had that little mare until I had to have her put down when we were both 33 years old. She was one of those horses that people still talk about and she's been gone 16 years, just a true gem, half QH half Arab. The only time she was tied to the trailer was during Rough Stock events, the guys used her to steer wrestle off of too.
My Christmas that might compete with that actually came on November 19th this year when the vets were able to successfully remove CC's bladder stone and the ultrasounds showed her kidney's were functioning!!!! This girl doesn't need anything else..probably EVER, LOL!!! |

| My favorite Christmas memory is when we were little we always went to my grandma and grandpa's house and after we ate, all the cousin (7 girls from 6-13) would go in the bedroom and make costumes, scripts, and tickets in secret then we would "Suprise" eveyone and put on a big "play" for our parents and grandparents. It is so funny looking back at the videos. We thought we were Broadway actors, but we just ran around in Shepard, lamb, and angel costumes, and sang christmas songs like "Away in a Manger". |

Location: your guess is as good as mine | Mom, Dad & I would go out & eat Christmas Eve at a restaurant and leave the waiter/waitress a $50 tip for Christmas, then drive around & look at Christmas lights until time to go to the midnight (well...11pm) service at church. Then we'd go home & go to bed...Christmas morning Dad would make orange danish which we'd eat while opening presents, then we'd either have Christmas dinner at home with Aunt Martha or we'd pick up Aunt Martha and drive to NW Arkansas to join Aunt Shirley and all of her kids/grandkids/great-grandkids for a big dinner. |

Location: Arkansas | I have so many wonderful Christmas memories that it is hard to pick just one. But ...
When I was 12, my saddle was absolutely falling apart. My dad had cobbled it back together so many times that I don't think it had any original leather on it and I was outgrowing it. I knew my parents didn't have enough money for me to get a new saddle but somehow that scrimped and saved enough to get me one "from Santa." I don't think they bought each other gifts that year. Even at twelve I realized they must have made sacrifices but looking back now I realize even more. My dad caught my horse and saddled him for me so I could ride around in the yard by flashlight (Christmas Eve night) all bundled up. |

| Every year on Christmas Eve, Santa and Mrs. Clause came to our house. I fully believed in Santa until the day I saw a Marine tattoo on his wrist. When he handed me my gift, his sleeve pulled back and I saw the tattoo. I knew I had seen this before. A few days later, I was taken to visit my dad at his business. His partner was busy working but I saw that tattoo. I quietly walked up to the man and whispered; "Barney, are you Santa?" To which he replied, "Yes, but don't tell my secret." For another year, I thought Santa was a sign painter in Yuma, Az. OMG, Did Barney and his wife make the BEST Santa couple EVER. It was magic. |

Location: Texas | My best Christmas was when I was 8. I was finally getting my first saddle, not the old hand me down I had rode in. We had went to Mr. Carl ammermans and he measured me so the saddle fit me and something I could ride for a long time. Well saddle came but I wasn't allowed to look in the box of course. Well mom and dad decided Christmas Eve that year I could pick any present. I went for the huge box that had to be the saddle!!! I was all excited as I dug in and it was that old hand me down. I was so mad at them well the next morning that same box was wrapped, it was my saddle. That is one of the best Christmas' I have had. To this day that is still the go to saddle. |

| We live in a small farm community so there are some kiddos whose families are low income. So our elementary/middle school had a Christmas store come every year. My son was in kindergarten and was so excited to be a big boy and do his own shopping. He asked if he could have some money to buy presents. I thought he was buying gifts for his friends, but on Christmas day I found out he had bought presents for me! I still have those Christmas decorations. He was so excited and proud to have picked out my presents all by himself! |

Location: MD | My Mom really loves Christmas! Every year, she would get out all of the trees and decorations and prepare to start doing up the house. We always had a real tree in the living room, but there were artificial trees in each of the other rooms. We would help her get everything out of the attic and then she would tell us to leave her be. We would always check in and ask if we could help her with anything. Her response was always Nope. Without fail, she would get about 3/4 of the way through decorating, start throwing tree limbs around the room and screaming about how she couldn't get any help. She would then officially "cancel" Christmas, get in her car and drive off. Once we were all done laughing, we would finish decorating. Upon Mom's return, she would Ooh and Aah at the job that we had done, tell us how much she loved us and go about singing Christmas carrolls. I think Mom used to hit the eggnog pretty heavily! haha |

Location: MI | My fave Christmas memory is from high school, and possibly a bit illegal. I leased a horse and became close friends with the owner, Scarlet, and her daughter. There was a nearby park owned by the county that the owner said used to be a Christmas tree farm. The owner of the farm had passed away a few years before, leaving the land to the town, leaving Scarlet in a lurch as she had prepaid for so many years of trees. So on Christmas Eve after the sun went down we went on a renegade mission. Saddled up the horses and under the snowy moonlight found the perfect tree. Hauled it back behind her barrel gelding. I am surprised I didn't lose my feet that night, it was COLD and I wore my cowboy boots, but it still is a fun memory! |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | We had wonderful Christmases growing up. Lots of traditions...making Santa cookies and hot chocolate on Christmas Eve while watching It's a Wonderful Life, me writing a crazy letter to Santa to leave with the cookies telling him how angelic I am and how horrible is my sister, hiding the ornament with my sister's pic on it and putting mine front and center, the 2 of us getting up at 3 am and sneaking into the living room to see what Santa brought with no light except the twinkle lights on the tree (magical), getting our parents up at 6 am to open presents. We still do all that with our own kids, all of us together. I love it!
One of my favorite memories was before we got married, the year my sister had to work Christmas Eve night in the NICU at ACH, 7p to 7a. She was upset about missing out and I was too, so I called her through the night to update her on what we were doing, what the tree looked like at 3 am, so she sort of felt like she was there. We didn't have smart phones back then, so it was all word descriptions. We waited on her to get there before opening presents Christmas morning...
...meanwhile, I broke a mug making coffee. I cleaned it up, but missed a piece. She rolls in, goes to the bathroom.
And screams. Her cat was in there, and apparently cut his foot on the glass without us realizing. There were puddles of blood in the floor, blood on the toilet, blood on the vanity, up the outside of the tub. It looked like a murder scene, or maybe something out of shark week. Merry Christmas, sis.
it's funny now, but at the time not so much. |

Location: SE Louisiana | I remember my favorite Christmas memory... I was working on my 1st cow dairy... about 7 or 8 days before Christmas the only pet in a herd of about 170 cows had her 3rd calf. She was a Holstein and the biggest pet you ever saw. One of my favorites. She had a hard calving and was paralyzed in her rear end. For the first three days she would try often to get up but she would just fall over... Soon she just quit trying. Twice each day I would go out and bring her food and warm water and clean up behind her.... I found some old blankets to throw over her to keep her warm. My boss told me they almost never got up after being down that long.... This was to be my first Christmas away from my family as the boss wanted me to work so he could be with his family all day.. After milking and doing the cleanup on Christmas morning, I loaded up the usual food and water and went out to see #5.. the down cow... As soon as I walked up with the bucket of water, she stood up.... I was so happy I started to cry... I don't know if that was my best gift ever, but it's the one I remember the best. |

| My favorite Christeas memory goes back to when I was a kid....in the third grade.
I was living in Washington and my parents and family were very close then. My sister and I were camped put in her bedroom waiting for Santa because I still believed. My sister and I stayed up all night telling stories and at one point she even got me thinking I saw Santa out the window. Eventually we fell asleep and woke up at like 5 in the morning. Santa had come. I will never forget how the Christmas tree looked. It was beautiful! We got my brother up and mom and dad up and opened presents. I got the coveted Furby my mom managed to swipe off Ebay. This memory may not seem like much, but it was one of the times I remember being with a family that wasn't broken. Not long after that we moved to Kentucky and my mom had a mental breakdown and my dad moved on and from there I moved out on my own. Now Christmas is spent running around to all these different places. Heck, I can't even get ahold of my dad to see what he wants to do. Sometimes I feel like we have lost the meaning of Christmas which is not about the gifts, but simply being with the people you love and enjoying them. Merry Christmas guys! Hold your loved ones close and make some memories that will last a lifetime. |

| When I was about eight years old, my family was having some work done on part of the house, including the living room, so we could not put the Christmas tree there. We ended up putting it in a small bedroom along with the television and the couch. This left only a small bit of room to move around. My favorite Christmas memory is my entire family smushed into that tiny, crowded room and watching A Charlie Brown Christmas together. |

Location: North Dakota | My favorite Christmas memory: Going to Grandma's house on Christmas Eve Day. All the cousins would be there. We would go ice skating on Grandma's pond (Grandma would ice skate too). We would play football (had mostly boy cousins). We always had to have Lutefisk with supper (Yuck). After supper we would all get in a circle and join hands and sing Silent Night and other Christmas Carols while Aunt Lana played the Piano.

Location: on my horse | my best christmas memory was the year 2000, I was 8 years old. We had lost my first horse earlier in the year to arthritis and had spent months looking for the perfect horse that would give me confidence and take care of me. About three weeks before christmas we drove about an hour in the fog to look at this "red roan" gelding, he ended up being a big ol 15.3 HH deaf appaloosa gelding with the most beautiful mane and tail I'd ever seen. I fell in love with him before we even got out of the pickup and knew that he was the one. Reno took care of me that first day that we looked at him, and we came back the next day to look at him again. My mom swore to me NO SPOTS!! We are an AQHA family and that isn't going to change. Low and behold christmas morning I stepped outside our front door and tied to the porch upwright was Reno! He was my best friend for 12 years, every christmas morning he would get a special treat and we would bring him up to the house to hang out with the family and re live that special special morning. I have the best parents in the world, and had the best horse that any girl could ask for. He was my best friend, rodeo buddy, deer hunting friend, 4-H packer, english riding teacher, and omoksee champion, until the day he died at 32 years old. From first ride to first rodeo, to the loss of half my soul, Reno was and still is my favorite christmas memory

I come back to this thread every day and enjoyed reading the "memories"......This one really touched my heart ....I wish you a VERY Merry Christmas! |
