What do you feed instead? What supplements are you using for vitamins and minerals?

I feed a diet balancer - many different feed companies are now making them. I buy pro advantage diet balancer by progressive.

I mix my own feed from oats, corn, beet pulp & alfalfa pellets. My horses have access to loose trace mineral salt as well as loose Dynamite minerals (Izmine, 1-1 and 2-1 calcium / phosphorus). Any supplements I feeed come from THE. My horses have full turnout on pasture during the summer and grass / alfalfa mix hay year round.

I feed 1 pound of crimped oats, one scoop ShoGlo (I don't give the vitamin daily unless I am hauling them), a good probiotic, 1/3 cup canola oil, and a joint supplement, one time a day. They get pasture most the time and alfalfa hay when they are put up or when I'm hauling. Works great for me. I know what they are getting because I can see it, lol.

What made you decide to make the switch from commercial feeds? I'm really wanting to do it, but for so long I've been told you can do harm by it. ):

Do you have problems with ulcers, young horses growing? . . . what about the hard keepers?

I have never had a horse that did not do well on this program. I've had horses that didn't do well on commercial feeds though. I try to keep things as simple as possible for me and my horses. I try not to do processed foods and I don't like feeding them to my animals either. I don't have hoof or joint problems, my horses stay fit and healthy, and I know what is going into them. I can't see what is in those feeds, especially the pellets, for all I know I could be getting the batch that they put the floor sweepings in, lol. Everybody has a different opinion and some folks feed processed feeds and do just fine with them. The best thing you can do is research it yourself, decide what fits your lifestyle, and your program for your horses... then do that. Don't let marketing ploys entice you to buy a product on the basis of their ads. Make your own decision.

Good luck with whatever route you choose to go!

I simply don't care for commercial feeds, i want to know what I'm putting into my horses......just like I want to know what I'm feeding myself. I have everything from new foals to my retired 24 & 25 yr olds on this mix & it works great for everyone.

I also just ordered some Coconut oil and I'm waiting for it to come in... It works a little differently than the canola oil so I am switching the canola for coconut oil... We'll see how it goes, :).

You mentioned Alamo saddles. I will say I sold saddles and Alamos are not crap and are very well made and with good leather. I wouldn't count them out. In fact I like them better than circle y.

I feed renew gold, alfalfa pellets and steam rolled oats. 2 horses are on DAC orange superior and the other two get a few cups of calf manna thrown in. Very happy and so is my bill fold!

If I had 1/10 the amount of money that feed companies have spent over the years I would be a wealthy person. TAMU continuously runs analysis tests on all feeds to make sure that what is in the bag matches the tag. You can check online to see which feed companies have the fewest violations and which have the most. They do these tests on regional feeds as well. If you are hauling all over the US obviously you would feed a feed that you can get anywhere. If you go places on the weekend or stay around home a quality regional feed works just as well. They spend money on research too.

I used to feed my horses straight oates and my dad told me that I needed to feed a balanced ration. My dad fed a lot of livestock----we had a couple hundred head of cattle and a couple hundred head of hogs and about 20 ranch horses. My dad read extensively about feeds. I did what he said----that was about 45 years ago. Also there is a guy that lives near me. He is about 80 and has cutting horses. I think all he does is read about horse nutrition and feeds. He does not mix his own feed. I would say he has been feeding horses 60 years.

Not every feed works great for every horse but there are.certainly enough feeds to choose from that one will fit your horse

Oats, purine amplify supplement, plus good fertilized pasture (rye grass hybrid for winter grazng), orchard grass (10-15% alfalfa) and free choice minerals. Additional Pure alfalfa hay when they are getting rodenor additional energy is needed for warmth. No problems, grain is. Pretty much a supplement for pasture for me. We fed straight oats, alfalfa, and minerals since the early 70's. Many times we would add a little corn.. Crap grandpa used to buy two rows of corn from a farmer and he'd take us to the field to pull ears. Fed it on the cob, lol

Cost and consistency is the reason why I prefer to have my feed mixed.
