Someone posted a reply a while back to a thread on feed. I don't remember when or why but they mentioned adding copper to broodmares feed. I found this looking around last night at work. Thought it might be of interest to someone http://www.vitaflex.com/res_hocarea.php
I would only add a mineral if I knew from feed analysis that my horses were deficient in it. I wouldn't ever just add it to be safe. Too much is just as bad as not enough.
people need to know what they are doing and why when adding supplements or minerals to horses diets.. most add and have no idea why or if horse needs it and some add so many the horse gets toxic .. just because other horse people have theirs on one.. i see a few with their horses on several differant things.. makes me cringe because half have no idea why except its the in thing.
It says the high amount of copper was 30ppm. Do you realize how much that is??? 30 parts per million in a supplement. Not much. I would think any good horse mineral would have that much.
I just walked out and checked my FEED sack label. It contains 20ppm copper. I think perhaps this experiment was for horses that were out on pasture and needed a mineral supplement.
