Location: Oologah, Oklahoma | A week ago I looked out into the pasture to see a pony I have had for the past 17 years hobbling around with her back right leg dangling; the cannon bone was severed in half and broken through the skin. Sadly we had to put her down ourselves so she would not suffer any longer than she had to and thank GOD we noticed this within the first 5-10 minutes of it happening. I am still scratching my head trying to figure out how it happened. She was out with 2 mini mares and 1 big paint mare. I looked all around the hay ring and gates and could not find any evidence that she got her leg caught, which leads me to believe she probably got into a scuffle with my big mare and got kicked. Have any of you guys had this sort of thing happen? It was such a freak and shocking deal, I'm still trying to learn to accept it a week later. She was so special to our family. :(

Location: Texas | I'm so sorry for your loss. I've not had this happen but had a friend who had it happen. She only had one horse in the pasture at the time. Never figured out what did cause it, I'm sorry to say.
Prayers for peace and comfort. |

I'm really sorry. Sometimes they get hit just the right way and things happen. You did the right thing and took care of her. Hugs |

| I had this happen to a weanling and not sure what exactly happened. I had two turned out in a pasture together, and it was a nice day out. I remember seeing them out running, bucking and carrying on earlier that day. When I went to feed, he was laying down with the leg snapped in two. I just figured it was a freak accident, but it was hard to deal with! He was a very nice colt that I had bought from Rockinas a couple months earlier. |

Location: Oologah, Oklahoma | Thanks, everyone. It has been really hard but I just keep telling myself thank goodness we caught it after happening so quickly and that my husband was home to help...it would have been awful to find her bled out and dead. :( |

Location: Montana | I am so sorry this happened to you! We had a yearling do this to a front leg. The horses were all getting their teeth floated and we had him tied up. He had been tied a lot and never had an issue. That particular day though he just kept fidgeting and pacing back and forth. Never pulled back but just wouldn't stand. Then he just jumped forward and smacked his leg on the post he was tied to and it compound fractured. It was the most awful thing to witness and so sad to have to put him down. Many hugs to you. |

Location: west of East Texas | I had an older horse trip and fall in the pasture and when he tried to get up the leg completely snapped. My dad saw it happen. We think he fractured it in the fall and trying to get back up was too much for the leg. He was 32 years old though and I'm sure his bones were more brittle than most. There weren't any other horses or other objects involved. |

| I had a horse that somehow managed to jump into a concrete feed bunk. He threw such a fit fighting it that he snapped his leg at the hock. I have no idea how he managed to do what he did. Horses can get themselves into unbelievable situations. Sorry you list your pony. |

Location: SD | I am very sorry you had to experience this. I had to put down a beloved gelding due to a fractured hock a few years ago. I didn't see it happen, but I'm fairly certain he was kicked. I was heartbroken. |

| I am so sorry for your loss...you and your family will be in my prayers. I had a pony (my first horse) whom I had a long time. I only had 2 horses at a time, and they were in adjacent pastures. Same thing...went out one day and he had broken his front canon bone in half. Sometimes older horses just get brittle bones and things happen...God always has a plan!! They get to spend the rest of forever galloping around with Seabiscuit now =] |
