My 11yr old mare is probably the easiest keeper I know. Which is not always a bad thing but in this case it is. I only am able to ride her 4 days out of the week or so (Not including jackpot and or rodeos on the weekends) and yet she is over weight, but is no where near obese. She is out on a pasture with another mare that has a variety of grass but definitely not a full 5 course meal. They also gets oats with H-35 mineral supplement and these keep her healthy and well. The only problem I have is keeping her at the ideal weight. She has no problem with gaining muscle but instead loosing weight. If anyone has any exercises that are beneficial to getting her to loose weight rather than gain muscle and would share, that would be appreciated!

I started my horse on low starch feed and more grass hay than alfalfa.   Do lots of long trotting.  It has made a big difference.  Good luck

I agree on long trotting for long stretches. Halter folks work theirs at a trot no more than 7-10 minutes to keep the mass. So you'll want to go longer than that. Lots of cantering and hill work at a trot. Maybe even pull her off oats-- may have to change the supplement.

I agree it would be good to check her for Cushings, etc.
