| What do you all think of a covered arena .. That is 75 ft wide ? Do you think that's wide enough for barrel races & such ? It would be 75 x 200 . Thoughts please ! |

Location: Somewhere up North | I have a covered and sided indoor arena that is 80x100 and I could not imagine running barrels in an arena any smaller in width. When I built my arena, the price difference between 70' and 80' was not all that bad but I don't know the price of materials in the current market. Did you check on the pricing for 80' wide? |

| Absolutely not wide enough. Just looked at a place for sale with a 200' x 100' indoor and that was even cutting it short. |

Location: Back in MT BABY!!! | Would you be running wall to wall? I think indoor patterns need to be a min of 12' off of the fence with 75' that would put 1st & 2nd 51' apart....the NFR pattern is 60' between the two. It's not ideal but it would work. ETA: I personally would like wider if it was my personal pen....and espically if it was wall to wall.

Location: WI | There is an indoor arena up North here in Wisconsin that is 72'x200' and they have barrel races there every month. Personally, one of my favorite places to run, but most my horses like small pens. Times ran there are 12-13 seconds. |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | Mine is 90 x 200 and I wouldn't want it any narrower. I lose 5' of floor space with the fence/wall that goes around my pen. Even though it's 90' wide, I only have 85' to work with. And if my barrels are 15' off the walls that's down to 55' between barrels. 1 & 2. It's fine for me working my own horses but I wouldn't host a barrel race in it. |

Location: Its Freaking Freezing Up Here... | 100 X 200 is a nice size I think. I know lots of people go 80 wide, as it costs significantly more to get trusses over 80', and although it isn't as nice as 100', it's workable. We have jps in lots of 80 wide arenas up here.

| I think if it's creating a covered space with good ground it is doable, I had acres to a 70 ft wide arena to train a horse and he kicked butt in indoors, but, he had to be trained not to use the walls, I have recently priced indoors and 70 wide verses 80 is a fairly large chunk of change, I think if you can afford 70 it can work. |

Location: Sunny California | Like someone else stated, prices jump significantly when you go over 75-80 ft wide. I priced them out a couple of years back when I lived in Texas and for a 60X80 $30,000 and I think it jumped by $20,000 plus the going 75ft. wide. If money isn't a problem I would go as wide as I could afford. |

| When I was in MI we had a 60x220 indoor and hosted twice monthly barrel races. It was small, but not dangerous by any means. Sure made you have to ride quicker. |

| Thanks everyone ! I think 75 ' is too narrow also, but not horrible . I think we'll do 80'. I think that is plenty doable . |

| Check the height as you could do like i have seen some, where 1st and 2nd the add extra to width you could do like 10-12 foot on the outside. It the rafters where tall enough. |

Here is a good gauge for arena sizes... You can go check out the facebook page...
A New Standard In Barrel Racing...
The following measurements are with the barrel on the inside of the stake… example: Arena wall/fence, stake, barrel.
Standard Patterns for Barrel Racing
Arena size… 150' X 250' or larger (patterns A - C will fit this arena)
120' X 200' or larger (patterns B - C will fit this arena)
110' X 200' or larger (patterns B - D will fit this arena)
100' X 200' or larger (pattern D will fit this arena)
90' X 190' or larger (NFR pattern will fit this arena)
75' X 125' or larger (MINI -Mini patterns may be set in any arena)
Pattern A: Current WPRA standard pattern - 90' between first and second barrel, 105' between barrels 1 & 3 and 2 & 3, 60' from timer line to barrel 1 & 2. When using a closed gate or side entry gate a minimum of 75' between timer line and fence, chutes, or exit gate is recommended.
Pattern B: 80' between first and second barrel, 95' between barrels 1 & 3 and 2 & 3, 50' from timer line to barrels 1 & 2. When using a closed gate or side entry gate a minimum of 50' from the timer line to the fence, chutes or exit gate is recommended.
Pattern C: 70' between first and second barrel, 85' between barrels 1 & 3 and 2 & 3, 40' from timer line to barrels 1 & 2. When using a closed or side entry gate a minimum of 50' from the timer line to the fence, chutes or exit gate is recommended.
Pattern D: (Recommended for smaller venues with closed or side gate entry/exit.) 65' between first and second barrel, 80' between barrels 1 & 3 and 2 & 3, 30' from timer line to barrels 1 & 2. When using a closed or side gate entry a minimum of 50' from the timer line to the fence, chutes or exit gate is recommended.
2013 NFR Pattern: 60' between the first and second barrels, 70' between barrels 1 & 3 and 2 & 3, 43' from timer line to barrels 1 & 2. When using a closed or side gate entry a minimum of 50' from the timer line to the fence, chutes or exit gate is recommended. PLEASE NOTE: The above dimensions are rounded to the nearest foot. This recommended pattern is 1 inch off the original pattern. Barrels are staked in the center of the barrel at the NFR, if using a side stake, please place stakes as follows... 62' between barrels 1 & 2 and 71' between barrels 1 & 3 and 2 & 3.
The Mini: 45' between first and second barrel, 65' between barrels 1 & 3 and 2 & 3, 25' from timer line to barrels 1 & 2. A closed gate is not recommended for this pattern in arenas that have a floor length of 150' or less.
SUGGESTED SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
BARRELS 1 AND 2 SHOULD ALWAYS BE PLACED A MINIMUM OF 15 FEET FROM ARENA WALLS AND FENCES, WITH 20 FEET BEING THE IDEAL… BARREL 3 SHOULD BE A MINIMUM OF 25 FEET FROM THE BACK ARENA FENCE OR WALL, IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
IMPORTANT…
PLEASE CONSIDER THE DISTANCE THAT IT TAKES TO STOP A HORSE, RUNNING AT FULL SPEED, FROM THE 3RD BARREL TO THE TIMER LINE. THE SUGGESTIONS LISTED BETWEEN THE TIMER LINE AND THE FENCE, CHUTES OR EXIT GATE ARE "MINIMUM" REQUIREMENTS AND SHOULD BE ADJUSTED TO LONGER DISTANCES IF THE ARENA LENGTH WILL ALLOW IT.
When posting results be sure to include the pattern letter followed by CG or SG for a closed or side gate entry/exit.
