Location: Texas | What is your recommendation for a turnout blanket for a 28 year old mare? I need something pretty tough. I live in Texas about 1/2 way between Houston and Dallas. She has a decent winter coat, but I'm having a tough time keeping weight on her. Vet says she's healthy, just old. Teeth are as good as she's going to get. She get's senior feed, three times a day, soaked alfalfa cubes, 30 acres of pasture, a barn/stall. But I want her to have a blanket on cold nights, which aren't daily here, but enough.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Location: lone star state | Tractor supply has some nice midweight and sheets that are 1200D that have held up really well for my horses. Smart pak also has a nice economy weatherbeta 1200D that have held up nicely. Also smartpak has good info on blanketing you can find on their website. |

I just bought 2 off their website. They have very comparable prices on their blankets. |

Location: Kansas | I like my saxon, I just spray a few cans of scotch guard on it just in case. Maybe you can put a fleece liner under the blanket as well for extra warmth for her? |

| We put our 28 year old mare in a Tough one 1600 denier heavy weight, but we are in Iowa. We got it from Chick's Saddlery, who run great deals on blankets. That sucker never even got a scratch in it either. |

I bought this style for all 4 of mine this winter:
http://www.horse.com/item/saxon-1200d-high-neck-250g-turnout-chestn...
I really like them so far. I only use them when it gets below 30 so they have only been on a few times so far. They fit really well though. I love the high neck as it doesn't pull at the wither and actually covers quite a bit of the neck on mine. The only con is they are not very long in the sides. They come down just long enough to cover their bellies but there is not much extra. I cross the belly straps and it pulls the sides snug and keeps them covered good enough. It's not a bad low cost blanket at all. Saxon's have always held up really well for me. I was tempted to get a Tough-1 but so many reviews said they didn't hold up well. |
