I have rode a Merrill since 2001. I love my saddle and has fit most of my horses. I have horsea that are any thing from very TB type with big withers and narrow to wide with no withers. So far I have only found 2 horses it doesn't fit. My stud and a colt by him have no withers and it rolls no matter what pad I use. I have found some very observant ratey horses can fell you sit much more and I have a hard time with that they want to rate too much. I really like the the cinch and how it is out of the way of my leg and the weight of the saddle. Between my mom and I we have 4 of them and they are anywhere between late 90's models to a 2010 model. They all sit a little different. The newer tree is definatly more heavy duty and does make the saddle weigh more.

I had one that I loved, but I found that I was getting too much behind my horse with it in the turns. I ended up selling it for a Pozzi and the deeper seat made a huge difference. I wouldn't hesitate to have another though.

I'm using one on my downhill built horse that sometimes feels like he hit a brick wall when he sets.  I sit him better in the Merrill, plus it accommodates his large shoulders while still fitting behind the withers.  I haven't used it on anything else yet.

Do you mean that you felt like you were stuck in the "sat down" position in the merrill and couldn't get up with your horse? The horse I am currently running starts to set the second I even begin to sit down. No one believed me that he was so sensitive, so I sat deep half way between my first and second and be rated to turn with no barrel in sight. They all believe me know when I say he's super ratey

Yes, I didn't feel like I could get to the fron of my saddle when I needed. It may have been the way it sat on my horse, but since I switched to a Pozzi I don't have that problem. My Pozzi also seems like it fits him better. I loved my Merrill for riding colts though, just had to sell it to get the Pozzi.
