Location: TN | How long do hock injections usually last?
I had my gelding injected for the first time last March. His left hock was showing some heat on the thermograph and that hock was the reason I did a lameness exam on him. My vet is awesome and after a full exam he injected both hocks. Well it hasn't been a full year and he's showing stiffness and soreness in that hock again. I'm getting him a vet appointment and have been giving him time off until I get him injected again. Just curious for your thoughts. Why would it be giving him issues again so quickly? Is that normal to only last less than a year? |

Location: Oregon | My have usually only lasted about a year. It really depends on why you are needing to inject and how hard you are using the horse. But I plan for once a year at least to check on them. |

Location: Missouri | Depending on the severity of the hock and how hard you run, decides on how long the hock injections last. Some horses can go a year and others can only go 6 months or less. Often times joint supplements and therapies (adequan, hock wraps, swimming, legend, oral joint supplements) can prolong injections. If he is feeling sore and locking up then it is time for injections. I would recommend if you are wanting to prolong when you inject, looking into adequan, legend, and even hock wraps. Just my thoughts. |

| My mare has moderate arthritis in her hock and injections weren't lasting any longer than 3 months and her hock isn't completely fused either. It all depends on the issue in there and the horses pain tolerance and it also depends on what they are injecting the joint with too on how long it lasts. |

Location: God's country...aka TEXAS | There's no way injections will last a year. Most last 4-5 months depending on what kind of injury, injection etc. |

Doing other therapies can help extend the time and keep inflammation down. |

Location: North Dakota | I've been told 3 to 6 months for hock injections. After injecting my gelding for the first time in June/July, that seems about right. |

| Some of my horses get injected every 3 months, some every 4 months and some every 6 months. It depends which horse. I have one horse that looked fine to me and I had him injected just before Christmas. Wow, what a difference. Last time he was injected was the first of July. Platinum CJ helps tremendously in spreading you when you need to have the horse injected. |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | The gelding we inject routinely last eight to nine months. When it gets close to time he loses some of the roundness in his turns - wants to slice the barrel and vee the backside of the turns. He gives these very clear indications and if we do not inject pronto, he will begin to get trashy at the gate. |

I love my BOT hock wraps. PHT makes a pair and so do numerous other companies. I would suggest either PHT or BOT because the science and research is there. |

Location: Its Freaking Freezing Up Here... | So a question on this note. My gelding was due for injections in about September last year (I could tell based on performance). We were done for the season so I just kicked him out for winter. I am now going to be beginning to leg him up, starting in the next couple weeks. Would you guys get your horses injected before beginning this, or just before making runs? I probably won't make a run on him until early March. Just taking into account how long you are saying they last. I dont' want him to start the year off feeling sore though.
Thanks! |

Me personally I would have them done while you are legging up. I had asked our small town vet this same and he said he would wait until I start running. It did not work out very good. |

Location: ND | I think it depends on how sore your horse is. I get mine in shape before injections, but absolutely no barrels or hard small circles.. its mostly just long trotting straight lines, and loping large circles. I'll get her injected a few weeks before I plan to run her, to give time to get used to smaller circles again. Listen to your horse. |
